Horace Nelson

Horace Nelson, 82, of Chipley passed away Saturday, April 16, 2011, after an extended illness. He was a lifelong resident of Washington County and was of the Baptist faith. Horace never met a stranger and always greeted everyone with a smile on his face. He was a member of the Masons and constructed a bridge across Econfina Creek while participating with the Florida Trails organization. Horace loved to hunt and often fished in his pond never forgetting to share these adventures with family and friends. He was a member of the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War and was employed at International Paper Company in Panama City for many years.

He was loved dearly by his large family and was a generous and loving husband, father and grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his son, Phillip Nelson; parents, Oscar and Eva Kent Nelson; and his sister, Mildred Tindell.

Survivors include his devoted wife, Martha Jean Nelson of Chipley; son, John Easton Nelson of Chipley; daughters, Katherine Ann Nelson and Rose Mary Perkins and husband, "Tim," all of Chipley; brother, Harold Nelson and wife, Annette, of Chipley; sisters, Bertha Jones of Chattahoochee, Fla., Joyce Nelson Ellis of Lake City, Fla., Mary Ellen Johnson of Pensacola, Fla., and Janice Ann Wheeler of Chipley, Fla., six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held on Monday, April 18, 2011, at 10 a.m. at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home with the Rev. Beau Cooksey officiating. Interment will follow in Piney Grove Cemetery, Washington County.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 17, 2011 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Marianna Chapel Funeral Home.
