Kerry Schell Obituary

Dr. Kerry Franklin Schell, age 81, of Knoxville, TN, died Nov. 20, the day before his 82nd birthday.

He is survived by daughter, Holly Janney, son-in-law David Janney of Knoxville, daughter Sara Schell of Marion, VA, and son Robert K. Schell of Knoxville, as well as their mother, Kathryn Schell Yeager of Knoxville, and many nieces and nephews. He also leaves Priscilla Felknor of Dandridge, TN, long time companion, and her daughters, Anne Felknor and Laura Jo Squires and husband John and grandchildren, Olivia and Mitchell Squires.

Dr. Schell was born on November 21, 1927 in Tower City, PA to Dorthea Schell Reiser and Robert Schell. He was preceded in death by his sister, Judith Schell Wick of Houston, TX and brother, William Schell of Tower City.

He graduated from the Milton Hershey School in Pennsylvania in 1945 and from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. degree and an M.S. in forestry. Dr. Schell received his Ph.D. in forest economics from Duke University in 1962. He worked for the Pennsylvania Game Commission before serving in the Army during the Korean War, and was employed as an economist with the Tennessee Valley Authority. Dr. Schell retired in 1990 as a Professor of Forestry at the University of Tennessee. He was active in many conservation organizations including the Society of American Foresters, being honored with the Outstanding Service Award in 2000. He also received the 2004 Penn State Mont Alto Centennial Fellows Award and served as President of the Kentucky-Tennessee Forestry Company. Dr. Schell was a lifelong outdoorsman, an avid bird hunter, and active in many professional and community organizations.

A memorial service celebrating his life was held Saturday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church with Pastors Eric Murray Pastor and George Doebler officiating. Following the service, friends and family are invited to a reception at the church.
