Steven Sherwood Obituary

Steven Sherwood, 57, died at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital on Sunday, June 5, 2011.
Born Sept. 14, 1953, in Baudette, Minn., Steve's family relocated to Wheaton, Minn., where he spent the remainder of his childhood.
He served two years in the Army, deployed to Germany as part of the 101st Paratroopers Airborne Division. He received an honorable discharge in 1973 and returned to Minnesota where he attended Willmar Community College. In 1976, Steve moved to Fairbanks where he has resided for the past 35 years.
Steve initially moved to Fairbanks to work on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline with Laborers Union Local 942. He then worked as general manager for Nickelodeon Records, until the store closed its doors in 1979. He has been employed at Florcraft Carpet One Floor & Home for the past 32 years, starting as a carpet installer, and eventually taking on the role of IT manager. Steve received his bachelor of arts degree in social information systems in 1993 from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, enabling him to work in the IT field he so enjoyed. He was known by his coworkers as being meticulous and knowledgeable in his field of work. He developed lifelong friendships from his many years of employment at Florcraft.
Steve was an unpretentious, intelligent and giving man; always putting the needs of others before his own, especially the needs of his children and grandchildren whom he adored above all. He will be forever remembered for his soft-spoken manner, his kind and gentle spirit, and his trademark sense of humor. Cool beans! (His favorite expression.)
In his younger years, he enjoyed riding motorcycles and was into muscle cars. He enjoyed working on computers and learning about new technologies. He was an avid collector of movies and music, and he enjoyed taking pictures and videos of his grandchildren. He was very proud of his grandchildren, and has left an indelible mark on their young lives. He will be forever missed.
Steve is survived by his daughter, Amber Sherwood, of Fairbanks; his uncle, John Sherwood of Orinda, Calif.; brothers, Tom Sherwood of Caldwell, Idaho, Bob Sherwood of Big Lake, Minn., and Joe Sherwood of Waconia, Minn.; his sister, Mary Forbes of Jackson, Miss.; his many nieces and nephews; and his grandchildren, Nathanael, Isaiah, Zoe, Anorah, and Taylor of Fairbanks.  He was preceded in death by his beloved father and son, Bruce Sherwood and Nathanael Sherwood, respectively.
A service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, June 11, at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. He will be laid to rest at Birch Hill Cemetery. Following the burial service, friends and family are welcome to attend a potluck reception at Growden Park, next to Goldpanner's Field.
Memorial contributions may be made to: Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home c/o Steve Sherwood's family, 415 Illinois St., Fairbanks, AK 99701.
Arrangements were entrusted to Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.

I send my sympathies to Amber, CeCe, the grand kids, his other family members, and all the people Steve took under his wing over the years, including my own two young'uns. He's at rest now, and he ran a good race.

Steve offered me profound words of widsom to help me create improved self esteem, and allow me the strength and courage to believe in who I was. And to never settle for anything less. I always wanted to thank him for that personally. His words made a positive impact on me, and I grew up quickly after that. Best wishes to his family and friends during this time of sadness,

Steve, was a classmate of mine from Wheaton, MN - He was friend of mine since 5th grade. I tried to stay in touch with him by email, but had not talked to him in awhile. My deepest sympathy to the family, I know he was a very nice man and you will miss him alot.

I am sorry to hear of Steve's passing.

My son and Steve's son were friends in elementary and middle school. During a time when both boys were starting to act out, Steve was a wonderful balance in my son's life, and support to me when I worried so much about both of them. He didn't always have the answers, but he was willing to keep trying, never gave up on the boys, and I know how much he must have missed Nate.

Rest in peace, and condolences to his daughter and grandchildren.
