Lewis Vondra Obituary

Fairbanks resident Lewis Francis Vondra, 81, passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Serenity House.
Lewis was born on Aug. 15, 1929, in Canon City, Colo. to Benedict and Agnes Vondra. Lewis graduated high school from The Abby in 1947. In 1952, Lewis joined the Army and served in Korea, earning Korean Service Medal with 4 bronze service stars and the United Nations Service Medal. On June 23, 1956, Lewis and Carol were married in Canon City. Lewis worked as a partner at Coal Creek Canyon Coal Mine from 1953 to 1961 in Colorado. Lewis became the owner/operator of Browns Hill Rock Quarry and Yutan Construction Company from 1961 to 2000.
Lewis was a beloved husband, father and grandpa. He had a strong work ethic throughout his whole life. He enjoyed growing tomatoes in his greenhouse, but his favorite thing was to get a back rub from anyone willing. He will be greatly missed.
Lewis is preceded in death by his parents, Benedict and Agnes Vondra; his brothers, Ben and Joseph Vondra; and his sisters, Catherine Roche and Margret Giroux. Lewis is survived by his wife, Carol Jean Vondra; his daughters, Linda (Russ) Grainger, Rosanna Vondra, and Cathy (Larry) Kitchen; his brother, Harry (Kay) Vondra; his sister, Mary (Frank) Flack; his grand sons, Mark (Amy) Grainger and Mike (Mariah) Vondra; his granddaughters, Sarah (Brian) Utter and Laura (Peter) Kulevich; great-grandsons, Vegas Vondra, Adrian Utter, and Jackson Kulevich; his great-granddaughters, Tyler Vondra, Camille Utter, and Alexandra Kulevich; and numerous nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service for Lewis 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 24, at Chapel of Chimes Funeral Home.

Margie used to tell me stories about how she would carry Lewis on her hip. That's how I picture him now, together with Joe, Marg, Ben and Kathren, all together and waiting for Mom to yell at them for dinner. No more worries. Carol you be taking care of yourself and when it all seems overwhelming, stop and do something you enjoy. Go to a movie, shopping or just get your hair done. Everything will be alright and tomorrow is another day. Love ya. Hugs.

Carol, Rosanna, and family,
I am thinking of you and remembering lots of warm memories of time spent with your family. Lewie's smile will always be in my heart, even during the cold Minnesota winters that he loved to tease about! : )
Warmest blessings,

Carol your daughter Linda just called and let me know that Lewie and you are apart now but we both know that it is not forever. What a good man you married. A family man, a business man and provider, a caring and loving husband and a man of integrity and honesty. Lewie loved his neighbor as he loved his family. Carol we want you to know of our love for you now and hope you dig in your flower beds and your yard will be a memorial to Lewie and you too. We love and care about you dearly. Your long time friends, Bill and Gloria Corey
