Marvin Aronson Obituary

Marvin Ellis Aronson, a resident of Fairbanks for 27 years, passed away in Hyannis, Mass., Oct. 19, 2011.
A graduate of Boston Latin School, the oldest high school in America, and Bates College of Lewiston, Maine, Marvin ventured north to Fairbanks in 1974 with a love of mountains and open spaces.
Marvin was a Teamster on the trans-Alaska oil pipeline in 1975 to '76, also freelance writing articles for the Boston Globe about life in Fairbanks. In 1977, he began working for the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner as a news editor, and later as the copy desk chief and Page 1 editor.
Marvin also wrote many feature stories and for 24 years gave Sourdough Jack a voice.  He had a love for languages and poetry and was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying all that Alaska had to offer in skiing, biking, hiking, camping and fishing.
But most of his time in the outdoors was spent pursuing his passion for fly-fishing, where at the end of the day he could be heard repeating the words, "Just one more cast."
In 2001, Marvin left Alaska and moved to Hyannis where he enjoyed the ocean and worked as copy desk editor for the Cape Cod Times until his retirement.
Marvin was blessed by his love of 20 years, Sheri Goodwin; his son Ethan and wife Jennifer of Haiku, Hawaii, and son Caleb of Fairbanks; his cherished grandchildren, Miel, Elias and Oliver; his beloved sister and brother-in-law, Elyse and Stephen Yanoff; and nephews Harley and Gabe Yanoff.
Private services were held. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or call

In Marvin's own words, ''I'm gonna miss that guy!'' He was my friend and favorite boss. You were always special to me, and all your Marvinisms live on!

I am very sad to hear of Marvin's passing. He used to check the first run of the News-Miner at the Big I, and as a new reporter I was fortunate to sit beside him as he variously shredded and praised every bit of those front pages. How can you both laugh and learn so much at the same time? In the newsroom, he was the one who, upon seeing someone had covered a tough story, would walk over and ask, "How are you?" Marvin was wise and kind, and he has left too soon. My deepest condolences to his family.

Marvin was head of the copy desk during my years at the News-Miner. This was my first job after college. He impressed me with his quiet way of getting the paper out daily under deadline pressure. He was a good role model. My best to his family.

Sheri,
I'm sorry I never met you, and sorrier still that I lost touch with Marvin after his retirement. He sure spiced up the newsroom, and I and my colleagues at the Cape Cod Times miss his sharp wit and sharper eye. Wishing you peace. Julie Lipkin

Marvin had a laughter that he was quick to share, and a generosity that was inspiring. There truly are not words to describe this loss, but so many beautiful memories to hold tight.
