Sidney Huntington Obituary

Sidney Huntington passed into eternal life on Dec. 8, 2015, surrounded by his family at the Yukon Koyukuk Elders Living Facility in Galena.
He was born May 10, 1915, in the village of Hughes along the Koyukuk River. His mother, Anna, was a Koyukon Athabascan of the caribou clan. His father was a gold miner, trapper and trader who came to the Koyukuk country in the early 1900s. They lived at Hogatzakaket, where the Hog River meets the Koyukuk, about 90 miles downstream from Hughes.
Following his mother's sudden death when he was 5, Sidney, his brother and three sisters were sent to the Anvik Mission. Later, he and his brother, Jimmy, attended the Bureau of Indian Affairs school at Eklutna, where he completed the third grade.
When he was 12 years old, he returned to help his father on the trapline at Hog River, where he learned many essential subsistence skills.
At 16, Sidney was on his own earning a living by trapping and fishing from their camp at Batza Slough.
When World War II came along, Sidney took a job as a sheet metal worker at Fort Richardson and then at the new Galena Air Force Base.
After the war, he married Angela and moved back to the Hog River country and eventually to Huslia, where he lived mostly by subsistence in combination with cash jobs.
In 1963, Sidney moved to Galena to take a steady job as a carpenter for the Air Force. Even though he only completed a small amount of formal education, he learned a lot by reading books, magazines and anything he could get his hands on.
He dedicated much of the latter half of his life to promoting education for rural Alaska students.
He was part of a dedicated group that formed the Galena City School District in the early 1970s, and went on to serve on the school board for 21 years. His was a frequent presence in the school.
He faithfully attended daily basketball practices almost to the end of his life and was an honorary assistant coach on Galena's state champion basketball teams.
He loved speaking to students and confronting administrators about why test scores were not as high as they could be. The K-12 school in Galena is now named after him.
In the '70s, Sidney got into the fish processing business, which remained his main livelihood for quite a few years. He served 17 years on the Alaska State Board of Game.
In 1989, Sidney was conferred an honorary doctorate from the University of Alaska.
His life is immortalized in the book "Shadows on the Koyukuk," which he co-authored with Jim Rearden. For one of his book signings, he wrote: "I lived a long life and seen many changes in Alaska. Education is the key to making a good life for yourself. Get involved in something to support the community. Don't just sit around and expect something for nothing."
Sidney is survived by his wife of 72 years, Angela Huntington, along with many children, numerous grandchildren, greats, and great-greats as well as many, many others who knew him as "Grampa Sid."
A funeral service and traditional potlatch will be held Friday, Dec. 11, 2015, in Galena. Burial will be at the Louden Cemetery outside of Galena.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations and condolences be sent to the Yukon Koyukuk Elders Assisted Living Facility, P.O. Box 189, Galena, AK 99741.

Not sure what to say?

Having read his book, it is clear to me that Mr Huntington was an exceptional man. He is a great example of the need to do things oneself, rather than wait for someone else to do them for you.

I got to meet Sidney in 2008 at the Iditarod checkpoint in Galena. A great man with great stories! The play WINTER BEAR and his book SHADOWS ON THE KOYUKUK are both great tributes to this extraordinary man. I pray that for his wife, family, friends, and all of the masses of people whose lives he touched will also be touched miraculously by God with salvation, love, mercy, and forgiveness that only our awesome God can give us!
God's blessings to all.

I had the pleasure of meeting Sidney 3 years ago at the HS graduation in Galena. It was truly a honor to meet someone that I had read about and followed through the various media over the years. Every year since, I have returned to Galena for graduation; I would see Sidney and say hello and ask him "Do you remember me?" He would look closely at me and ask "are you the one from the Big Lake? (Lake Iliamna)?" No matter how insignificant it may seem, it meant the world to me that he remembered me :-) RIP Mr. Huntington, you have left a hole in Alaska that will be close to impossible to fill.

I have never met Sidney Huntington but have heard a lot about him, everyone showed their love for him from what I've seen on facebook and in the news, he knew most of my Demoski family and other relatives there in Galena and along the Yukon and in Alaska. I knew Roger, he has my condolences and so does the rest of the Huntington family. RIP Sidney, you are now an Angel watching over all of your many friends and relatives.

So long Sidney; thanks for all the good company! Some 10-15 years ago, I was on my way to Kaltag for a Stickdance. I ran into Sidney at the airport & asked him if he was going this year. His response was consistent with his very dry humor, i.e "I was to Kaltag for a Stickdance in 1948, I don't want to spoil it." Blessings to his wonderful family - Duane (Lonnie) Sipary

Sidney: Your light will always shine in our hearts--- you were the best example of "brotherly love" and its true meaning of "I care about you" to all peoples. LOVE, Olinga and Peter Flisock

Sidney Huntington was one of those rare people who was not only a hero to many, but also created heroes in his wake. A tough, intelligent man who fought for the common man (and woman) against the encroaching bureaucracy with a care and compassion for humanity. A life well lived. My condolences to his wife and family, and thanks for sharing. I'm sure Dakli's tail is waving real hard.
