Douglas Behan Obituary

Douglas Lee Behan, of Deleon Springs, Florida, left this life May 18, 2014. He was born in Washington, D.C., on the Aug. 29, 1950, to the loving parents, Francis and Mary Behan. Doug arrived in Fairbanks during the winter of January 1975, which welcomed him with a record-breaking temperature of 65 degrees below zero.
Doug's career in Alaska spanned work on the Alyeska trans-Alaska oil pipeline, Hub Foods and the Alaska Railroad. When not working, Doug experienced trapping, goldmining, snow-machining, cross-country skiing, fishing, hiking in Denali National Park, camping, and many more activities Alaska offered to him. Doug relocated to Florida in March 2012, looking forward to a warmer climate and new adventures with the love of his life, Charlotte.
Douglas was preceded in death by his father, Francis, and is survived by his mother, Mary, of Virginia.; wife, Charlotte, of Florida and Alaska; twin brother, Dennis John, and sister-in-law, Ronda Morley, of Oregon; brothers and sisters-in-law, Barry and Gwen, of Virginia; Thomas and Helen, of Alaska; Robert and Linda, of Georgia; and cousin, Joe, and wife, Gail Bolcar, of Virginia.; nieces, Erin, of New York; Rebecca, of New York; Rachel Barnes, of Virginia; and Haily Chase, of Florida; grand-niece, Reagan Barnes, of Virginia; nephews, Bryan, of Virginia, and Kevin, of Virginia; and grand-nephews, Devin, of New York, and Owen Portello, of New York.
On his wife's side, he is survived by his father in-law, Jim McKellar, of Florida and Alaska; sister and brother-in-law, Holly and Walter Lindley, of Alaska; and nieces, Emily Rose and Rachel Lindley, of Alaska. There are many cousins and friends who also will miss Doug greatly.
Doug had a kind heart and loving soul who would do anything for anybody, regardless of the situation. Douglas will be missed for his generous spirit, unique sense of humor, sharing his big smile, Irish brogue greetings, and friendship to everyone.
Douglas had so much more to give to this world and left us too soon. We all will miss you, Doug.

Doug was one of those people you will always miss but never forget. He was an example for all of us to keep smiling in the face of adversity. If you have to say something a little off key or talk about an unpleasant job, say it in French, because it sounds so much nicer! You are still with me, my friend.

Doug, this came up on my phone today & I reread your obituary again & the tributes. I remember you & Dennis living next door to us in N.C. & both of you being pallbearers for our dads funeral. You even showed me around Fairbanks when I visited Fairbanks. My mom was so fond of you twins that lived next door to her & kept a watchful eye on her. Doug, you are forever missed.

Charlotte, I am so sorry for your loss. Doug was such a wonderful and kind hearted man. He will be missed...he left us too soon. I am Helen's sister and met you when I visited her and Tom in the late 80's. We are all blessed to have known him.

Dear Charlotte, Tom & Helen:
No words seem adequate to express my sadness.
Char, Doug was the love of your life and the way the two of you doted on one another was a living lesson in how a marriage ought to be. I will never forget his sweet nervousness at your wedding and how his eyes teared up as you two said your vows. Aubrey and Brick remember the long, long walk they took with Doug and how they could make his finger talk with just a pull!
Doug was such a gentleman and true friend. He had an unwavering moral compass but was always willing to discuss issues with those who were headed in a different direction. He grew more handsome and dashing with each year, with his long silver ponytail and ever-twinkling green eyes.

A few days ago, after hearing of Doug's passing, I took a walk down to the nearby lake, seeking some form of solace that only nature can provide, and there I saw my first frog of the summer, hopping along the little trail. It stopped and sat among the blades of green grass. As we gazed at one another, it became obvious that Doug is still with us and all around us. There was a blade of grass...!

I'm sorry for your loss, Charlotte. I have vivid memories of Doug helping out when times were tough, and laughing, joking, and being a gracious friend when times were good.

Life lasts as long as it does, sometimes gives little warning to its end, and we all head back to where we came from; sometimes seemingly too to early.

So long neighbor, happy trails. Thank you for your fairness and openness.

I had the pleasure of working with Doug for several years at the Alaska Railroad. Doug could always be counted on to come to work with a big smile and a Howdy, Howdy, Howdy! I was always impressed by how close Douglas was to his family. I was fortunate to meet his parents who were wonderful people. His brother Tom and sister -in-law Helen are kind and generous . I send my deepest sympathy to his mother,Charlotte,Tom and Helen and the extended family. I know Doug will be waiting for us on the other side and when we ask him how he's doing we'll see his big grin and he will chuckle and say"Much better now that you're here!"

Charlotte, I am so sorry for your loss. Doug was a true gentleman. He always spoke so lovingly of his "child bride".
I hadn't seen Doug in several years since I left the railroad, but the world lost a special soul with his passing, he will be missed. My condolences to you and the rest of the family.
