Ralph Hazylett Vann, age 86, died Thursday June 21, 2012 in SECU Hospice House in Smithfield, N.C. Born November 7, 1925 in Johnston County, he was a son of the late Arthur Dolphus and Mary Etta Batten Vann. Mr. Vann was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Lillie Gaye Batten Vann; five brothers - Fletcher Vann, Vernon Vann, Willie Vann, Clyde Vann, and Roland Vann; and one sister, Adele Vann Gilbert. Ralph served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the South Pacific, Japan, and the European Theater. He attended watchmaker school and later owned and operated Vann's Jewelers in Selma for many years. He was a member of the Selma American Legion Post and Selma Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Monday, June 25, 2012 in the chapel of Parrish Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Kirk and Rev. Chad Allen officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park in Smithfield.
Surviving are his nieces - Bonnie Capps, Linda Lassiter, and Mary Lou McKinley; nephews - Freddie Gilbert and Howard Vann; and lifelong friend, Tom Sullivan.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Monday prior to the service.
