Ed Vick Obituary

Mr. C. E. "Ed" Vick
RALEIGH
Mr. C.E. "Ed" Vick, 76, died May 13, 2011 following a brief illness. Born on November 8, 1934 in Jacksonville, FL; he was the son of the late Lucretia Dean and Edwin Vick, Sr.
Ed received his BS and MS in Civil Engineering with an emphasis in transportation and city planning from North Carolina State University. He was one of the founders of Kimley-Horn and Associates, Inc., a Raleigh-based engineering, planning and environmental consulting firm. As president from 1972-1992 and as chairman from 1992 to 2000, he directed the continual expansion of Kimley-Horn's services, which today include national and international engineering, planning and environmental services for transportation and land development. The firm currently employs over 1,500 people and has offices in 17 states.
Mr. Vick was a former registered professional engineer in 15 states as well as a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. He was also a past member of the Board of Directors of the NCSU Engineering Foundation and, at the time of his death, was serving on the Board of Trustees of NCSU's Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology & Sciences, the Meredith College Board of Trustees, the Board of Trustees of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship Foundation, the Associated Baptist Press Board, as well as the NCSU Board of Visitors. He was the recipient of numerous awards, including the North Carolina State University Distinguished Engineering Alumnus and the NC Society of Engineers Outstanding Achievement Award, co-chairman of Fundraising for the Parks Alumni Center, and in 2007 was inducted into the North Carolina Transportation Hall of Fame.
He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Raleigh where he served as a deacon and presently President of his Sunday School class. He was a founding member of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship (CBF), having named the organization. Mr. and Mrs. Vick have participated in mission trips through CBF including New York City after 9/11 and the Ukraine.
Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 47 years, Laura Anne; three daughters, Jennifer Catellani and husband Bruno, of Richterswil, Switzerland; Carolyn Durham and husband Bill, of Raleigh; Elizabeth Kirkman and husband Daniel, of Concord, NC; brother, Harold Vick and wife Judy of Sebastian, FL; and nine grandchildren, Andrea and Lucas Catellani, Grace and David Durham, Ross, Ryan, Rebecca, Madison and Meredith Kirkman.
Ed's four loves in life were The Lord, His Family, Kimley-Horn and NC State. He enjoyed walks throughout the Alps in Arosa, Switzerland, relaxing in the hammock with a good book in Salter Path, NC, and cheering for his beloved Wolfpack.
Family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8 PM at the First Baptist Church (99 North Salisbury Street in Raleigh), with funeral services to be held on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 11 AM at the church. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 PM on Tuesday at Nashville Cemetery in Nashville, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the Mission Fund at First Baptist Church or to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.

Ed was a wonderful friend.

Judy and Ed Baxter

June 10, 2011

My wife and I met Laura Anne and Ed Vick during the first day of the 2011 Women’s ACC basketball tournament. We were all waiting for the doors to open for the second afternoon game. We talked of common interests; Ed being Class of 56, I being class of 63. Both couples had children and grandchildren who we were proud of and the men had a deep desire to see N. C. State sports excel. That day, at the State boosters buffet before the Boston College game, Ed introduced us to the assembled fans as his most recently met close friends. What a wonderful gesture. It speaks of the man and his generosity to others. Today I read with great sadness that Ed had passed away. As well I learned what a long shadow he cast while he was with us, not to my amazement but with a smile. Laura Anne, it was our pleasure to have spent a little time with you and Ed in Greensboro. Judy and I extend our condolences to you and your children.

I have a lot of fond memories of Ed, from mowing his lawn, to cooking pigs with him, to visiting his beach house, but as I turned 50 last week, one fun story was when my dad turned 50 and we had a pig pickin for him. Ed surprised us all by having a belly dancer show up to dance for Bynum. My friends who were at the party still talk about how fun that was. I will always remember the good times.

Many people are grieving over this sudden news! As a female CBF pastor who was ordained at First Baptist in Raleigh, I always knew that Ed and Laura Anne supported me and did everything they could to help women answer God's call to minister to the least, the last and the lost. He will be sorely missed, but his legacy lives on through his children, grandchildren and ministers like me. -- The Rev. Dr. Joy Heaton

Ed was a visionary who impacted many lives through Kimley-Horn and his other many associations. His optimistic good natured way made people comfortable in conversations with him. Ed provided strong leadership in growing Kimley-Horn and many people benefitted from this growth. He is surely going to be missed by those who continued to be in contact with him after his retirement. I personally appreciate all he made possible in my career. A very Good Man! Thanks Ed.

I will always remember your laughter and the laughter you brought to others. Your dance down the aisle of a business kick-off to "I'm so excited" still brings a smile to my face. A great contributor to the field of engineering who made a wonderful difference in the lives of so many.

Laura-Anne and family --- I am so sorry to hear about Ed's sudden departure; you and your family are in our prayers and thoughts. I am Deana, Ann Lewis Dean's oldest daughter. I have many wonderful memories of Ed -- his laugh, his bigger-than-life presence, the family reunions you hosted. Wow...what a life he lived. I'm sure God has him engineering and building things in Heaven already! And I'm sure one of the first things Ed heard after arriving back home was 'Well done good and faithful servant!"

Laura Ann and Family,

I am so very sorry for your loss. Ed Vick was a fine man and a kind gentleman. He was always fun to talk to and I enjoyed watching him with his children. Bert always thought so highly of him. May God bless you in this difficult time. Children, good friends and church family are certainly part of that promised comfort.

God bless,

Years ago when I was thrust unexpectedly into a leadership position with NC Baptists, Ed Vick gave me heartfelt encouragement, solid advice, and wise counsel. I will always appreciate his support and friendship. His humor was infectious, and his courage was too. We've lost a great man.

I am so sorry to learn that Ed has passed away. I thoroughly enjoyed all the time we spent together voluteering to support NCSU engineering. We met with many of the "power brokers" of the day - 20 years ago - and he was always cordial, displaying his great sense of humor, but persistent. It was easy to see why he was so successful with his business. Laura, may God bless you and your family.

Ed Vick was part of my introduction to the larger-than-life character that can be the South -- engaging, embracing, sometimes overwhelming, but always remarkable. My first view of his office told me that this wasn't any ordinary company I'd joined. The wall of family photos was as long and full as the wall of awards, and his desk top glittered with little crystal doodads -- I guess just because he liked them. His memory for people was phenomenal: when he learned that my husband had grown up in Meredith Woods, he quickly recalled that James' mother had "died young, didn't she?" and asked "What's his father doing now?" I found it exemplary, not surprising, that Ed's entrepreneurial vision helped to shape the CBF into the sturdy organization it so rapidly became. These days, having become accustomed to the big personalities we grow down here, the only thing I find surprising is the idea of a world that Ed doesn't have a direct hand in. More strength to all of us who learned from him.

Laura Ann, Jennifer, Carolyn and Elizabeth, our hearts go out to you on this day as we remember Ed. I thank the Lord that you indicated that his love was for the Lord. I have known Ed since we went to graduate school together at NC State and worked on the North Carolina Highway Research projects which helped pay our way through State. I enjoyed working with Ed so much and then at all the Traffic Engineer Conventions, Southern Section and the National. We loved to see Ed and Laura Ann. Ed was so special that he came to our wedding from Memphis and found the small town of Madden, Mississippi. I actually went to work with Kimley-Horn reigh after graduation to work of a project which they had for a new freeway through Durham, NC. Ed was such a joy to be with as we traveled the state together and then worked on our degrees together. I have know him since 1958.
It was a blessing the last time with had dinner with you Laura Ann and Ed and Harvey and Hilda in North Atlanta when you all were down for the Basketball tournament.
Jesus said, "For God so loved the world that whosoever believes in Him will have eternal life." Ed is now with the Lord in Heaven.
"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God, trust also in me. In my Father's house are many rooms; If it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you." John 14:1-2. May God bless you and give you peace. Nita and Bob Roseveare, Stone Mountain, Georgia.

Laura Anne, Jennifer, Carolyn, and Elizabeth,

I hurt for you all at the loss of the Champion Among Men, a real Baptist in today's world. I had the great pleasure of serving 17 years with this great friend on the Board of Directors of Associated Baptist Press. I always enjoyed his wisdom in good decisions regarding some difficult situations. Ed was a thorough thinker and not timid about his decisions even though they might have fallen on unpopular ears! He was always a great asset to our cause. He was a very good friend as well and we spent many hours enjoying that friendship that I will always remember. He will be missed greatly and he will not be easily replaced.
So, each of you live with a memory of a man who gave of himself selflessly and un-hesitantly to those he cared about and those organizations and institutions who were dear to him.

I played soccer with Carolyn for many years on the 68 Spartans. I will always remember Mr. Vick cheering loudly for our entire team. He would always have great big bear hugs and a big smile for all of us following games.

Ed Vick was "one of a kind." His candor, tempered by love for all and for God overall, was a real plus. Ed loved everything he participated in but was not afraid to challenge the "status quo." He loved his family, his church, NC State and Meredith College, and his professional ties. We need more "Ed Vicks" in our society and hopefully more of us will step forward to attempt to take his place. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family whom he was totally dedicated to.

I met Ed in 1983 when he as Kimley-Horn's president, and his people had dinner with Bob Hutcheon, our President and our people in an exploratory meeting to evaluate the merging of our two firms. I was so impressed with Ed, his pleasing personality and charming ways of making you feel you were his best friend. And that feeling only deepened as time went by. The merger was obviously very succesful and allowed the vision and expectations of this great man to lead this combined firm to unparalled successes. I know he will be missed by his family but the "original merger family" of K-Horner's will always remember that he was the "man of the hour" and will never be forgotten!
We all will mourn his death, yet fully knowledgeable that he is with Jesus now, his Saviour, another very close friend, and we will pray for Laura Anne and the family in this hour of loss.

I worked at KHA for several years and it was a pleasure meeting Ed, receiving his warm handshake, his exuberant smile and thoughtful comments. Ed was a man with a vision, not just a technical professional and founder. While all the managers had their different styles, Ed's was the positive, expressive 'bear hug' style. On my first trip to Raleigh to present the corporate photography results in the board room, it was Ed who exclaimed "This is the photography we deserve!", while others commented on the budget. How could you not love Ed Vick? He was the big picture, the long vision and the warm, open heart.

I trust his family, close friends and colleagues feel as I do, that we're so lucky to have known and worked with a fine man like Ed Vick, in a firm like Kimley-Horn.

Ed Vick was a Baptist's kind of Baptist, a Christian's kind of Christian, and a man's kind of man. He rubbed shoulders with the elite of society but he gave his heart to the most neglected of society. Ed was the kind of man I think Jesus would have liked to "hang out with." I know I did. He was my great friend and I will miss him.

Laura Ann, I grieve for you and the girls. I grieve for myself and Karr La. But I rejoice for Ed. "Well done, good and faithful servant!"
