Sara Arrowood, 92 of Raleigh, died Wednesday, February 29, 2012. Born November 19, 1919 in McKeesport, PA, she was the daughter of Benjamin and Ella Heisler.
Sara moved to New York City in the 1940's where she met her future husband, Hilliard. After marrying they lived in Asheville, N.C., Franklin Square NY, and again in Asheville. While working as a legal secretary, she was also dedicated to being a loving mother and wife. After retiring, she resided in Asheville and later moved to Raleigh, NC after their granddaughter Kristin was born. She was a long time volunteer in the Raleigh community, including First Night, local hospitals, the library, as well as volunteering during the 1999 Special Olympics World Summer Games. She was an avid reader and delighted in reading the weekly New York Times Book Review. Life-long learning was a special pursuit and she continued to take non-credit college courses well into her 80's. During her years in Asheville, she loved hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains with Hilliard while members of the Carolina Hiking Club.
Surviving are her devoted husband of 65 years, Hilliard J. Arrowood; sons, James A. Arrowood, M.D. (Catherine) of Richmond, VA and Andrew H. Arrowood (Elizabeth) of Raleigh; grandchildren, Kristin M. Arrowood of Raleigh and Matthew J. Arrowood of Richmond, VA; brother, Sydney Heisler of Pittsburgh, PA. She was preceded in death by her sister, Flora Herskowitz .
A Memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 4 at 2:00 PM at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 1701 East Millbrook Rd., Raleigh, NC. Rabbi Steven J. Kirschner will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sara's memory to The American Red Cross, 100 Peartree Lane, Raleigh, NC 27610 or to the charity of your choice.
