Mary Weston Obituary

Mary Anderson Weston
(nee Chapman)
Raleigh
Mary Anderson Weston (nee Chapman), died peacefully on 10 April after 92 years of bringing happiness to others.
Beloved daughter to Robert Woodley and Grace Curling Chapman of Portsmouth, VA, dear sister of Bobette Ogle of Portsmouth, devoted mother of Edward J. Anderson, Jr of Washington, DC, Robert C. Anderson of St. Louis MO, and Susan A. Allen of Conway, SC, and the beloved "Mama Woodie" to 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, 2 step-children, 7 step-grandchildren, 8 step-great-grandchildren and to countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her 2 husbands, Edward Johnston Anderson and Durant Edward Weston.
Mary moved to Raleigh in 1939 and proudly served the City of Raleigh as a "Welcome Wagon" hostess and became head of the organization before leaving. In 1955 she joined the NC State Employees Retirement System from which she retired after 25 years as the head of the Refund Division. She then volunteered countless hours at Raleigh Community Hospital where she was Volunteer of The Year in 1985. She was a lifetime member of Civitan International and was especially proud of her work with the handicapped through the Happy Time Bowlers and the NC Special Olympics.
Mary was a strong advocate of those less-fortunate among us. Accordingly the family would appreciate gifts to the Capital City Civitan Club (for the Happy Time Bowlers or Special Olympics) PO Box 10814, Raleigh, NC, 27605, or to the Boys and Girls Homes of NC, PO Box 127, Lake Waccamaw, NC 28450, in lieu of flowers.
Visitation will be held at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home, 300 St. Mary's Street, from 5-8 pm on Wednesday, May 4, 2011. A funeral service will be held in the Wynne Center at 11 am on Thursday, May 5, 2011. Interment will follow at Historic Oakwood Cemetery. Doug and I knew her as MaMa Woodie. Although our times with her were few, the times we did share were full of fun and laughter. She could walk into a room and sunshine would follow. We will miss her. She and her family have been in our thoughts and we will continue to ask God's blessings on all of you. Doug and Sandy Gracey

Mary Woodley, as her parents called her, Mama Woodie to most of the rest of us,was my mother-in-law for 20 years by law and forever in my heart.

She was my friend, the best and truest I ever had. I loved her, admired her, and cherished every moment spent with her.

She was an inspiration to all who knew her; the most authentic example of "living life to the fullest" I have ever known.

Mama Woodie taught me how to look at "the glass half full", a lesson for which I will always be grateful. She set the standard for non-judgmental relationships, for helping and giving of oneself to others. She never counted the cost of her benevolence, but
rather took great joy in making people happy whether they were family or friends. Many of her friends were family in her eyes.

I always wanted to give back to her in some special way and that is why her son, Bob, and I named our third child
Mary Chapman-big shoes to fill, Dear Daughter!

Mama Woodie was with me when my first child was born and by my side when my mother drew her last breath. she said to me as she put her arms around me, "I'll be your Mama now".

This great lady will never be gone, she will live on in my heart and the hearts of everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her.

May God bless and keep you, Mama Woodie, until we are together again.

Ed, Bob, Sue and family; you have my deepest sympathy for the loss of Mama Woodie. Mary was the most kind, loving, caring, generous person I have ever known. She was the best mother-in-law and grandmother to Sue and our family after she married Ed Weston. We visited her often at the beach, enjoyed wonderful times and learned to love the ocean almost as much as she did. We have so many great memories of Woodie that we could never share them all. Woodie will forever be in our thoughts until the day we meet again. She will be sorely missed and I know she is praying for us all even as she sits in heaven laughing and joking with the Lord. She was a treasure and greatly loved by all who knew her.

Another good person has gone to Heaven. She was such a nice, giving person. Once she let us use her place on the ocean. It was so nice. My daughters, Jenny, Debbie and myself had such a good time there. I remember when Mary and I first met, we sat and talked as if we had known each other for years. I am so sorry she has left us and will be missed. I know one day I will see her again. Love, Jane
