Richard James Barton died peacefully in his home at 4:30 pm, Tuesday, October 4, 2016 after a courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by friends and family. He was 85.
The son of Rose and James Barton, and brother to James Barton, Elaine Barton Monsees, and Francis Barton, Richard was born on March 9, 1931 in Richmond Hill, Queens. He was a father to three children, Michael, Damion and Joseph. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Mary Ann Barton, his son, Damion Barton, his son Joe Barton and daughter-in-law, Gretchen Barton and his granddaughter, Hope River Barton. A loyal parishioner of St. Catherine's Church, he was a member of the US Marine Corps, a member of Knights of Columbus, and a member of the American Legion. He was a graduate of Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY and worked as an accountant for IBM for 32 years. His many hobbies over the years included making wine, travelling, oil painting, and making ceramics. He was a voracious reader, a lover of political news, and he never shied away from a good conversation. He loved to cook and bake, and kept his family and friends well fed with his many creations. He will be greatly missed.
Funeral arrangements will be through the Bright Funeral Home at 405 S Main Street, Wake Forest, NC. Visitation at the funeral home will be on Sunday, October 9, 2016 from 3 to 5 p.m. The funeral mass will be held at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church at 520 West Holding Avenue, Wake Forest, NC 27587 on Monday October 10, 2016 at 11 a.m. with a luncheon at the church and celebration of life to follow.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any mans death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
