Martha Bannister Obituary

Martha Temple Bannister, 72, of 704 Maxwell Drive, died Monday.
A native of Zebulon she was the daughter of the late Wallace Gardner Temple and Rachel Hoggard Temple.
Martha attended high school in Zebulon, NC where she was an outstanding student and basketball player. She played women’s basketball for Campbell College. At the time Campbell was a two year program and she transferred to Atlantic Christian College in Wilson where she received a teaching degree in physical education. Martha used her love for teaching, her talent and her ingenuity to teach the visually impaired at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind, in Raleigh, NC. Her desire to give her students the same physical education instruction that sighted individuals would experience was well respected.
She married Rolly Bannister (formerly of Mountville, SC) in 1961 and Martha set aside her teaching responsibilities at the birth of their first child in 1963. Since that day she devoted her entire life to her husband and her children, putting their needs in front of her own. She was a superior cook and an excellent homemaker.
Her greatest love was her family, especially her four grandchildren. Her God-given instinct to teach was ever-present, and she spent hours sharing and teaching her grandsons about integrity, responsibility, honesty and respect.
Prior to her illness, Martha enjoyed playing bridge with her girlfriends, reading, doing the puzzles in the daily newspaper, and watching ACC Basketball. Above all, Martha’s favorite place to be was on the porch with her family at the family lake home on Lake Gaston.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 am Thursday, April 7, 2010 at Montlawn Memorial Park.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, Rolly Bannister, Jr.; daughter, Amy Bannister White and husband, Kyle of Garner; sons, Sonny Bannister of Raleigh and David Bannister and wife, Dawn of Garner; brother, Gardner Temple and wife, Dean of Clayton; grandsons, Tyler White, Bryson White, Justin Bannister and John Ryan Bannister.
Visitation will be Wednesday 5:30 pm–8:30 pm at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Garner.
Contributions may be made to The American Cancer Society, 8300 Health Park, Suite 10, Raleigh, NC, 27615

Mr. Bannister and family,
Although I only got the opportunity to care for Mrs. Bannister for a little over a week, it was such a blessing to me. She was a woman who touched many lives and loved with all of her heart. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a beautiful smile and laugh that I will remember always.

I know you will all miss her presence here on earth but I am praying that God grants you the peace in knowing that you will again be reunited. I know that I am looking forward to the day that I can hug her neck in heaven.

In Christ's love,

I knew Marty at Campbell many years ago; in fact, I played basketball with her on the Campbell girls team. I remember her fondly. My condolences to you and the family.

Dear Rolly and Family,

Al and I have been thinking of you during this time of deep sorrow for you.

We would have been there tonight for the visitation had Al not recently had his surgery.

Martha sounded so strong when I spoke with her on Sunday afternoon, March 13, and talked about going to inpatient rehab soon. It is so hard to believe she is no longer with us.

Please accept our sincere sympathy, and know that we are saying prayers for you and your family.

Our love, Glenda and Al

Rolly, Ralph and I were so shocked to hear about Martha's death. We did not know she had been sick. She was such a special person that always made us feel special regardless of how long it had been between visits. I know you feel lost but God, family and friends will help get you through this. You and your family will be in our thoughts.
