Quentin Lindsey Obituary

Quentin W. Lindsey

Cary

Quentin W. Lindsey, Ph.D. died on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at Glenaire Retirement Community. He was born in December 1921 in Nebraska. Reared on a small family farm, he sought experiences beyond the world of rural Nebraska and joined the Navy soon after Pearl Harbor. Commissioned as a Navy ensign he was assigned to a landing ship off the coast of Japan and eventually traveled to China. Asia later became a significant part of his life. He completed BS and MS degrees in Economics from the University of Nebraska and obtained his Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University. He was an economics professor at NCSU, an economics advisor to the governments of Burma and Nepal, a Director with the Research Triangle Institute, Science and Public Policy Advisor to Governor of NC Jim Hunt, Policy Advisor to the Nepalese government through the United Nations, and he was instrumental in the establishment of the NC School of Science and Mathematics, the NC Microelectronics Center and the NC Biotechnology Center. Quentin authored a book titled The Transformation of Nepal which provided insights on the economic, political, and cultural underpinnings of society and government throughout the world.

Quentin is survived by his wife, Marjorie Lindsey. Their extraordinary 68 years of marriage began with an invitation to a dance in Virginia Beach, and included many years of adventures living and traveling in this country and abroad. They made homes in Raleigh; Burma, Nepal; and at Glenaire. He is also survived by his children, John Lindsey and wife Meg, Cindy Sauber and husband Jay, Karen Johnson and husband David. Quentin was proud of his six grandchildren: Jason Sauber and wife Stacie; Stephanie Liu and husband Patrick; Matt Lindsey and wife Kim; Thomas Lindsey; Michael Johnson and fiancée Sarah; and Lindsey Johnson. Quentin will be remembered for his contributions to teaching and governmental management across the globe; his ability to bring people together to discuss how to improve a community or a nation; his pleasure in a lively debate about public policy, whether in the office of a government official or over the dinner table. He enjoyed family vacations on the N.C. coast and in later years, family gatherings on the Glenaire patio to hear updates about his grandchildren.

The family thanks all the staff at Glenaire for their attention and care over the past 23 years. Memorial donations may be made to the Glenaire Resident Assistance Endowment at 4000 Glenaire Circle, Cary NC 27511. A memorial celebration will be held at Glenaire at a later date.

Not sure if this is still active but... First, I am very sorry for your loss. It is hard to lose a parent/grandparent at any age.
I am actually typing up my mother's letters she wrote to her mother from Burma in the 1950's and 60's. (She died in 2019) She mentions the Lindsey family numerous times. My family lived in Pyinmana and then in Rangoon from 1952 to 1962. You moved to Nepal in 1962, we briefly returned to he US. Our fathers both worked for the Ford Foundation. Anyway, Karen Lindsey was my best friend in Burma and I was just reading how sad I was to have to say good bye. I have had a lot of 'coming to terms with' being a third culture kid and often wonder if others had the same adjustment problems. Sorry to make this about me but wanted to reach out. I hope the family is well.

I remember Dr. Lindsey and Margie picking me up to go to a Nepali-American friend's Dashain get together of 1981 in Chapel Hill hosted by Dr. John Paul. Back then, such gatherings would have perhaps 10% Nepalis and 90% Americans.

I found out then that he had worked with my late father Rajeshwar Devkota in Nepal. They reconnected after that and they met several times in Nepal and here in Raleigh.

Dr. Lindsey helped develop and implement land reform policies along with Dr. Mohan Man Sainju and Dr. Bekh Bahadur Thapa. Later he worked on decentralization. He and his wife Margie both loved Nepal and kept keen interest in Nepal all their life. He even wrote a fiction while well into his retirement after many years in 2005 (The Transformation of Nepal).

Here in Raleigh, he and his wife would help visiting guests from Nepal connect with appropriate places and people. They rarely missed any opportunity to meet Nepali folks in local gathering, meetings, dramas, and general interactions. They enjoyed meeting people form Nepal and would always take stocks of happenings in Nepal and keep them curent.

They were initial life members of Nepal Center of North Carolina, Inc. (NCNC) - a friendship organization with an intent to help its members to grow to their fullest potential thru education and participation in social and community activities.

Kamala and I have enjoyed their friendship personally over 35 years. I must mention that he took much pride on establishment of Agricultural Development Bank in Nepal and had very high regard for Shree Krishna Upadhayaya who ran the bank for many years.

We will miss him personally. Our condolences to Margie and to the family. NCNC and Nepal has lost a good friend. May his soul rest in peace.
