Kathleen Awbrey Obituary

The Rev Kathleen Davie Mizell Awbrey, an Episcopal priest active in working for peace and human rights, died on Thursday, 2nd October at Nash General Hospital.
Kathleen Awbrey was born in Florala, AL, daughter of Col. Frank J. Mizell and Mrs. Lauryn Godbold Mizell. She spent much of her childhood with her grandparents in Pine Hill, AL, where her remains will be buried.
Kathleen married Roy Dale Awbrey in 1954 and was a Navy wife for 26 years. During years of marriage they moved often, settling in Virginia Beach. There Kathleen finished her degree, graduating summa cum laude from Virginia Wesleyan College in 1980 before going to Harvard Divinity School, earning a Masters of Divinity. She was ordained to the Episcopalian priesthood in 1985. She served in the dioceses of Rochester, Central New York, Eastern Carolina and North Carolina. In the diocese of North Carolina she served on the Bishop's staff as Coordinator for Christian Social Ministries. She recently served as parish priest at St. Mary's Church in Speed, NC.
Kathleen served on the board of the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry and was a founding member of the Bishop's Committee on Hispanic and Farmworker Ministry. She was a member of the Episcopal Peace Fellowship, Christian Education Commission, and traveled to Central America with Witness for Peace.
The Rev. Awbrey is survived by sons, Roy Dale Awbrey Jr of Virginia Beach, VA and wife, Marjorie, David Mizell Awbrey of Cocoa Beach, FL and wife, Gayle McCaughin, Charles Patrick Awbrey of Knotts Island, NC; her daughter, Lauryn Earle Awbrey and husband, Neil Maclure of Harpenden, England. She is survived by 10 much loved grandchildren, Lee Eric McCaughin, David Byron Awbrey, Ian Awbrey Maclure, William Davie Maclure, Stuart Neil Maclure, Sara Elizabeth Awbrey, Charles Patrick Awbrey Jr, Melissa Lauryn Awbrey, Andrew Clark Awbrey, and Michael John Love Jr.
Donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to the Episcopal Farmworker Ministry, PO Box 160, Newton Grove, NC 28366.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 10, 2008 at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Rocky Mount, NC.
