This morning I read in the New York Book Review the memoriam to Al Young. I want to express my condolences to his family. The field of Early American History has lost a giant! I was a graduate student of his at Northern Ilinois University and after approval of my disserttion, he and I exchanged many e-mails. Al was many things to me. A father who demanded my best and pushed me to speculate about my dissertation topic. He was also a good friend and my e-mails to him brought out a very affectionate and caring side of his personality. Ultimately he was THE FATHER of my history career. Yesterday I sent him an e-mail ignorant about his passing. I told him that I was going to retire after thirty years as a state archivist. I know he would have responded with pride and praise.I shall miss him, but in spirit, he will be with me encouraging and caring.
