Robert Beattie Congdon died peacefully at home in Carol Woods Retirement Community in Chapel Hill, NC on February 20 after a valiant fight with cancer.
He was born October 17, 1926 in New London, Connecticut, the son of Carey Congdon and Frances Beattie Congdon of that city. His father was Finance Minister for the Town of New London; his mother a native of Philadelphia and Paoli, PA, was a devoted stay at home Mom. He was educated at Bulkeley School and Harbor School in New London, and after service in the US Navy, relinquishing an appointment to Annapolis, at Yale University Class of 1949. Having a lifelong romance with cars, he worked for Ford Motor Company in Fleet Leasing and then with Automotive Rentals Inc of Maplewood, NJ as Vice President Truck Leasing. He retired in 1991 and made his home on the island of Islesboro, ME. where he served on several civic committees and organizations.
He is survived by his children, Robert B. Congdon Jr of Hamden, CT, Frances Congdon Taussig of Dedham, Mass, and Victoria Congdon Cassara of Jericho, VT, and grandchildren, David Malter Congdon of Washington, DC, Katy Towers, now of Shanghai, China, and Gina Cassara of Jericho, VT. He is also survived by his second wife, Marcella Harrer Congdon of Chapel Hill & Islesboro,Maine.
Memorials will be held at Carol Woods Retirement Community and in Islesboro, Maine at later dates. Memorial contributions may be made to UNC Lineberger Cancer Hospital, to Carol Woods Retirement Community Resident Life Fund, or to the Society for the Preservation of the Free Will Baptist Church (PO 220, Islesboro, ME 04848).
Those who knew Bob well will agree that in days past Bob would have set off on this new adventure in high spirits, with a telephone book in one hand and a timetable in the other.
