Nell Kahdy Obituary
Chapel Hill
Nell Mettrey Kahdy was born and reared in Elizabeth City, NC. Nell's family moved to Raleigh where she graduated from Hugh Morson High School. Afterward, she majored in English and foreign Languages at Meredith College and UNC and began teaching in Warsaw, NC. She temporarily left teaching during WWII to serve as an interpreter of French and German for the American Red Cross in Washington, D.C. During that time, she met and married George A. Kahdy, a pilot in the US Air Force; they remained very happily married for seventy-one years.
After the War, Nell returned to NC and lived in Knightdale where she resumed her teaching career and raised three successful children. Four years later, she and George moved to Raleigh where she taught French and German at Needham Broughton High School for twenty-eight years. She was proud to relate that she loved every student she ever taught and never sent one to the office for disciplinary reason. At times, four of her former students were her doctors, a fact she attributed to a long and happy life.
While working as head of the Foreign Language department at Broughton, Nell was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the University of Munich and was the first High School teacher of German in NC. The National Foreign Language Association honored her as one of sixteen most superlative teachers in the United States.
In 1964, Nell became associated with the American Institute for Foreign Studies and for 30 years, supervised students and teachers in European study during the summers. With her lively and enthusiastic personality, she made many friends and served as a good American ambassador. In France, the Mayor of St. Jean de Luz, had a celebration and appointed Nell as an honorary citizen of the town.
Maintaining a positive outlook throughout her long and happy life, Nell never lost her love for people, music, and teaching, even when dementia slowly stole her short term memory. She never failed to express her gratitude to the wonderful staff at the Dubose Center at the Cedars of Chapel Hill where she spent her finals years.
Nell is survived by her husband, George, her children Barbara Estes (Jim), Dr. George N. Kahdy (Martha) and Georgette Stone (Fred); five grandchildren, Mettrie Lari (John), Demeree Stone Rosenberg, Fred Stone III, Dr. Kathryn Kahdy and Dr. Kristin Broadwell (Chad); and five great grandchildren, nieces and nephews in the Wehbie, Salem, Mettrey, and Saloom families.
The family will have a private memorial service at a later date.

Dear Mr Kahdy,
My deepest sympathy goes .t o you and your family. I only knew you and George, and I am sure that all your family were as well to know. Dad thought a lot of you and I do have fond memories of you here at the River eating oysters with Dad and Mr .Weed. George and I had great track competition in Junior and High School. Please pass on my best to him. Loved ones aer missed but never forgotten. I can personally relate to that in the most dearest way. I look forward to seeing you at out 50th Class reunion.

Mrs. Nell Kahdy and her family were all known to my family. She was my teacher as my German teacher, she co-shaperoned my Blakeway Tour in '62, and she supported my my senior year when I needed her most. She was also German teacher for my sister Sarah ('59). Her daughters were close friends of my younger sister Mary ('68), and her husband was my mother's principal at Enloe. Her later contacts with me through George and my mother Esther, were priceless support long after I had completed all my schooling and was teaching, myself.

Mrs Kahdy was one of my favorite teachers at Needham Broughton. She was so cheer,ful & didn't complain when some of us wanted to give our French book reports with our backs to the class--helping us to concentrate on what we had memorized in French, of course! Our prayers are with the entire Kahdy extended family. I knew Mrs. Kahdy for the first 1/3 of my life as she lived next door and her children George and Georgette were two of my best friends growing up. I remember riding to school with Mrs. Kahdy for at least two of the three years that I attended HS at NB Broughton. Mrs. Khady was a special teacher, putting more into her students' lives than one can imagine. She loved her students, and we loved her. There was a brilliance about her -- her personality, her abilities, her devotion, her dedication, and her life. She expected the best from her students, and she got it!

We were the outsiders, but felt like family at the Mettrey parties with the family at both Jimmy and John's houses.
This was a wonderful woman, warm and friendly that made us fee welcome.

Mrs. Nell Kahdy was pleasant, understanding and sincere to all. In 1953/54 she and Mr. Bello switched subjects and she taught some of my 8th grade classes. In my sophomore/junior years I was in her first German class, which was the first taught at NBHS since the war. She was my favorite teacher ever, and she loved to teach. I stayed in touch over the years, and I always told her how much being in her classes and knowing her had meant to me. She was one very fine Southern Lady. My heart goes out to Mr. Kahdy and family.
