David Van Rees Obituary

Beloved husband, passed away peacefully at Mission Terrace on July 22, 2015 after struggling with his health for the past several months. David was born on July 2, 1931 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital and recently celebrated his 84th birthday. He was the only child of Virginia and David Van Rees, Sr. David's parents and extended family were well-established members of the Santa Barbara community, historically owning many acres of orchards in the Santa Barbara and Goleta Valleys. Similarly, David continued this tradition as a farmer in the Goleta Valley.

David graduated from Santa Barbara High School in 1949. During the Korean War, he was stationed in Alaska as a member of the Armed Forces. David attained the rank of Captain and remained in the Army Reserve. He had many fond memories of his time in the service. After his return, he attended the University of California, Santa Barbara at its original location on Alameda Padre Serra, where he received his Teaching Degree.

He loved animals and was a long-time supporter of the Santa Barbara Humane Society, as well as other charitable organizations. He had a big heart and was very generous with those he loved. The Schmidt and Price families will forever be grateful to David for all of the caring support and generosity he bestowed upon them throughout his life. David will truly be missed by his family and friends. Most importantly, David was a devoted husband. He will be missed by his wife Margit, to whom was married for 53 years.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Michael Omlid and the Mission Terrace staff who lovingly cared for David on his final journey.

There will be a private internment. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Santa Barbara Humane Society or your favorite charity.
