John Ryan Obituary

John T. Ryan, formerly of Bethel, died on January 6, 2011 at Candlewood Valley Health & Rehabilitation Center, with his family at his side. He was 92. He is survived by his son Jack Ryan and his wife Patricia from Newtown, his daughter Margaret Patchen from Southbury, his daughter the Reverend Marion Hubbard and her husband Robert from Gaylordsville, his daughter Kathleen Ryan Mufson and her husband Paul Mufson from Weston, his son Timothy Ryan and his wife Joanne from Ocala, Fla. In addition to his children, Mr. Ryan is survived by 13 grandchildren, two nephews, a niece and three great-grandchildren. Mr. Ryan was predeceased by his parents, his wife Veronica A. Ryan, his son Charles P. Ryan and his sister Marion Geary and her husband Robert. He was born in New York City, the son of John A. Ryan and Clara M. (McGough) Ryan, on June 5, 1918. The family lived on the west side of Manhattan and Mr. Ryan attended Saint Paul The Apostle Catholic Elementary School and Power Memorial Academy. In 1941, he graduated with honors from Fordham University with a bachelor's degree in accounting. Shortly after graduation from college, he proudly served his country during World War II as a member of the United States Coast Guard. Upon discharge from the service, Mr. Ryan and his wife Veronica lived for many years in Woodside , New York with their six children. He worked briefly on Wall Street before beginning a forty-five year career at the New York Times in the circulation department. He retired in 1991 at the age of 72. He loved his wife and children and was very proud of their many accomplishments. He and his wife valued education and encouraged their children to pursue continual learning. He enjoyed taking long walks around New York , which he often referred to as the greatest city in the world. In his younger years, he played stick ball on the west side; he also enjoyed the horse races and the St. Patrick's Day Parade. During many summers, he vacationed with his family in Ocean City, N.J. Visitation will be on Friday, January 14, 2011 from 10 a.m. to 12 Noon at the Bethel Funeral Home at 215 Greenwood Avenue in Bethel, CT followed by a service at the Bethel United Methodist Church at 141 Greenwood Avenue, Bethel, CT. Donations may be made to the Charles P. Ryan Memorial Scholarship at Thomas College at 180 West River Road, Waterville, Maine 04901. Information and online condolences at HullFuneralService.com
