Sister Barbara Nyegaard

Sister Barbara Nyegaard, CND, formerly Mother Saint Barbara Miriam, 71, who lived at Holy Cross Convent in Waterbury, died Wednesday October 20, 2010 at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton. Sister was born September 13, 1939 in Bronx NY and graduated from St. Helena High School. She attended Misericordia School of Nursing and while a student there caring for a member of the Congregation of Notre Dame she was called to the community. She had been a member of the Congregation of Notre Dame for 50 years. During that time Sister taught school in Stamford, Providence, RI, and St. Albans, VT. Sister later went back to nursing school and graduated from St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Waterbury and received her BSN degree from Western Connecticut State University. In her capacity as a nurse, Sister directed the infirmary of the Congregation of Notre Dame in Ridgefield. For over 20 years, Sister was an instructor of staff development at Saint Mary's Hospital, remaining on as a consultant after her 2005 retirement. Sister Barbara generously served others with compassion and skill her entire adult life. She is survived by her sister, Judith Hoffman of Massapequa, NY, and her brother, Ed Nyegaard of Atlanta, GA, several nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and her CND sisters. Funeral Mass will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at S.S. Peter & Paul Church, 67 Southmayd Road. Friends are asked to meet directly at the church. Burial will be in Old St. Joseph Cemetery.
