Albert Chapar Obituary

Albert A. Chapar, Sr. of Stratford, passed away on November 28, 2010 at Bridgeport Hospital following a struggle with a brain tumor. He was born in Bridgeport on July 19, 1930, to Abraham and Zekie Chapar. He was a lifelong member of St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church where for years he served as the choir director. He graduated from Central High School in 1949, received his bachelors degree in education from what is now Southern Connecticut State University, followed by two masters degrees, the first from Southern and the other from the University of Bridgeport. Mr. Chapar was a dedicated and lifelong educator, who taught several subjects in every elementary school in the Stratford Public School System. In 1989, he was honored as Teacher of the Year. He retired in his final position as a guidance counselor at Stratford High School. His students spanned several generations. He remembered every one of "his kids" by name. He loved high school sports and remained a fixture at local events to the end of his days. Mr. Chapar had a marvelous tenor singing voice. Very early in his career and at a time when he had a young family, he suffered a nearly total loss of hearing. Even during an era less accommodating to the hearing disabled, he continued to teach and sing on pitch -- wearing his signature hearing aid without ever a complaint. He could dance like a professional and remembered well the glamour of the old Pleasure Beach Ballroom and the Ritz Ballroom, where he danced to the Big Bands. Mr. Chapar was known for so many things it is impossible to list them, but he was above all happy, kind, gentle and filled with love for his fellow human beings. He looked only for the good in people, and mostly that is precisely what he found. Growing up in the immigrant center that was Bridgeport -- with a great pride in his Syrian heritage, his American identity was forged and merged with that of his friends of so many varied cultures by shared national sacrifice and triumph. Like so many of them, he lived through the Great Depression, helped his immigrant parents achieve success in their new land, watched loved ones go off to wars and waited for them to come home, pursued his education, raised a family, saw men first walk on the moon, and learned to use the Internet to send messages to his friends and family. He was a devoted husband of more than 50 years to his wife, Stella Nastu Chapar. She pre-deceased him by just a few months. He attended to her daily during the months of her final illness. Nearly his first instruction following receiving his diagnosis of a likely inoperable brain tumor was for his son to drive him back to the hospital to sit by her side. When urged to rest for just one day, he replied, "I made a promise." He kept that promise and all others. He is survived by his sons, Thomas and Albert, Jr., Albert Jr.'s wife, Nadine Kirma Chapar; grandchildren, Sophia, Natalia and Helena Chapar; his sisters, Mary Chapar Moran (the former mayor of Bridgeport) and Nassa Sam and their husbands, Steve Moran and William Sam; sisters-in-law, Frieda, Catherine and Gloria Nastu; his close cousin, Nasra Chapar Condoleo and many nieces and nephews whom he adored. In addition to Stella, Mr. Chapar was preceded in death by his parents, his brave brother, Nicholas Chapar; his talented brothers-in-law, Aurely (Ray), Peter and Thomas Nastu; his sisters-in-law, Sofia Cipu Nastu and Rose Nastu, and his German Shepherd dog, Katrina, who gave him much joy. Calling hours are on Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. with Trisagion Services at 7 p.m. in the Commerce Hill-Radozycki Funeral Home, 4798 Main Street, Bridgeport (on the Trumbull line). Friends are invited to go DIRECTLY to St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church on Friday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Fr. Romanos Malouf officiating. Interment immediately following in Lakeview Cemetery. In memory of Albert and Stella Chapar, the family expects to establish a scholarship fund to ambitiously further their lifelong work in public education. In lieu of flowers, friends, family and former students may consider a contribution to this fund when it is established. Details will appear at www.chaparfoundation.org. Alternatively, donations may be made to the St. Nicholas Antiochian Orthodox Church. Memory Eternal.

I was very sad to hear of Mr. Chapars passing. Although it has been over 30 years since I had seen him my memory of his kindness to me is still very fresh. Mr. Chapar was a couleage and a freind to my Aunt, Maureen Dalton. My aunt enjoyed her freindship with Mr. Chapar as well as his help with her career in the Stratford school system. Mr. chapar also helped me as a counselor when I was in Stony brook Elementery school.Though I am sure he helped many children he made me feel as if I were the only one. My Aunt Maureen passed away in an auto accident in October of 1979 and one thing I remember of Mr. Chapar was that during her funeral he came up to me and put his arm around me and and told me about how wonderful my Aunt was and how much she had loved me. His kindness and compassion for me through this time is something I will never forget. When I found out about his death I wept and had wished that I had a chance to thank him. It is truly amazing how people can have such a profound effect on you. I am so glad that I knew him. I am sure his loss must leave a great void in your family but the wonderful memories that your family must have.....My sincere condolances..George M. Dalton Sr.

To the family of Mr. Chapar,
I was very sad to see that Mr. Chapar had passed away. I used to bump into him now and again, but had not seen him in many years. He did always remember a name. It seemed as if Mr. Chapar moved with my class from Nichols School to Wooster to Stratford High. It was nice to have such a wonderful presence around throughout many, if not all, of my school years. He was a very friendly and warm man and easy to talk to which made him a great fit as a guidance counselor. I remember he used to lighten things up by doing magic tricks. I am very sorry for your loss, especially after another recent loss, but I believe they are together. I am glad to have known him.

Mr. Chapar was my sixth grade teacher. RIP. He is the one who got me started on my fondness for math, which made me push to take Algebra in 8th grade (when my guidance counselor didn't think I could handle it), which lead me to getting a Mathematical Sciences degree at USCGA. I remember him telling us about being honest, always truthful which I have tried to uphold because of him.

Sending my Condolences to the Chapar Family. Mr. Chapar touched many lives especially mine. He was my guidance counselor at SHS, and whenever I needed advice, just to talk, (if i got into trouble) or for any reason, he would be there for me. He will be sadly missed.

How sad I was to learned of Mr. Chapar passing. It was just last week that he was on my mind, my daughter is going through the speech therapy program at her school and we had a long talk about my experience with speech therapy starting back in Franklin School working with Mr. Chapar. With him it never felt like I was being singled out, it was actually more like my special time to hang out with him. As many have said, he truly was a gentle, kind man that always made you walk away smiling and feeling positive that everything was going to be ok.
I feel very lucky to have had Mr. Chapar be a part of most of my school years, most teachers you have for one year, but it always seemed he was in whatever school I was at! With Mr. Chapar I think most of his students really got to have a relationship with him that you normally would not have had with a teacher.
And like others have mentioned, it was always a hoot to run into him around town, I never had to remind him who I was, he ALWAYS knew and had time for a qiuck conversation.
My thoughts go out to the Chapar family at this time, may your memories comfort you.

Mr Chapar was my first friend at SHS.

(He always remembered I told him that on my last day of school there)

He will always be remembered by the many students lives he has touched throughout the years. He was especially important in my life. As a teenager that had been moved around in an Army family all my life, and in my 12th school, he made sure I knew I was special. No one ever felt like "just another kid" around him. He would stop whatever he was doing, just to talk to any of us, anytime. I moved away from Stratford in 1990 and graduated in 1991. I sent a Christmas card to Mr. Chapar every year since then. (and have one addressed to him sitting in front of me now) ): He would follow with a card or letter about how things were going with him, always asking about my family , by name. I found him on Facebook last year and we talked for a while. It's been 20 years since I have seen him, but he will remain with me forever. I am now a teacher and it is my hope that I touch at least one child the way he has touched my life. Mr. Chapar, you will be missed, my friend.

It seemed as though Mr. Chapar was always my guidance counselor. When I was in Grammar School at Franklin School in Stratford, there he was with a smile, always knowing my name in the hallway as I walked by and in Stratford High School, guiding me to choose the right classes to prepare me for the future. As a matter of fact, i was just having dinner with a friend this past week and had a conversation with her about him.

He was so helpful, really cared about all of his students and always cheerful. I am so grateful to have these fond memories. I felt like he personally was there to help me. Each time I came to his door and tapped, looking for help, he always had time, he never asked me to make an appointment or come back later. He was one of a kind and will be missed by so many.

To the entire Chapar Family - My deepest condolences to you on the loss of your wonderful father, Al. He meant alot to me and was very instrumental in making me who I am today. His kindness, his peace, his encouragement lives on in all of the lives he touched, lives like mine.

Mr. Chapar was always there to lend an ear and helping hand. I was actually just sharing a story about him recently with a friend about choosing classes for my senior year at Stratford High School. He knew everyone's name and always had a smile to offer everyone he met. He was a genuine, caring man and will be missed by so many.

To the Family of Mr. Chapar,

I first met Mr. Chapar when I transferred to Stratford High School my sophomore year. I will always remember his kindness, and especially his smile that was always present when seeing him. It was a pleasure and a privilege to know him. Rest in Peace Mr. Chapar.

With deepest sympathy,

Gina Iannotti Edmond (SHS 1989)
