Camillo Tomaino Obituary

Camillo Tomaino, age 87, of Brookfield, the husband of Edith (Rossi) Tomaino and son of the late Pietro and Rosa Tomaino, passed away in his home on Sunday, October 10, 2010 after a brief illness. Mr. Tomaino, or "Poppi" as he was known to his grandchildren, was born on November 10, 1922, in Decollatura (CZ) Italy, the youngest of seven. At the age of 15 he immigrated to the US and settled in Danbury. In World War II he served as a US Army medic in India and the Philippines. In 1948 he met and fell in love with his wife, whom he married in 1950. He was blessed with a daughter, Karen Tomaino-Iannucci of Kent. He worked hard to support his family, at one time holding three jobs. He retired as a supervisor at Davis and Geck in 1985. He spent his retirement helping to raise his grandchildren Michael Tomaino-Iannucci of Cambridge Mass., Nick Tomaino-Iannucci of Brookfield, and Bianca Tomaino-Iannucci of Kent. He loved to help his friends and family. If he couldn't help, he always "knew a guy" who could. An active member of Danbury's Italian-American community, he was often found playing bocce or Italian cards at the Amerigo Vespucci Lodge, where he was president in 1993 and an active lifetime member. He was also a member of the Catholic War Veterans and the American Legion. In addition to his wife, daughter, and grandchildren, he is survived by his sister-in-law Mary Scattolini, as well as dozens of nieces and nephews in the US, Canada, Italy, and Argentina. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, October 14th, 2010 at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Brookfield. Burial will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury. The family will receive friends in the Jowdy-Kane Funeral Home, 9-11 Granville Ave., Danbury on Wednesday from 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Amerigo Vespucci Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 641, Danbury CT 06813.

This message is for Edith, Karen and the entire Tomaino family. I remember Camillo, Edith, Karen when you took your yearly visits to Welland Ontario Canada to visit your Zia Marietta on Regent Street. We will always retain fond memories of those years. If you recall we lived upstairs from Marietta and Filippo. Our prayers will be with you all during this time of great sorrow.
