Hack, Jr, Arthur
Arthur John Hack, Jr., 89, of Redding, CT died peacefully on Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at home. He was the husband of Fern Exner Hack. Mr. Hack was born August 24, 1923 in Rockville Centre, NY, son of the late Arthur John and Emmy Begas Hack, Sr. He had lived in the New Milford / Kent area since 1961, moving from Huntington, NY. He attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA. He was a veteran of World War II, serving with the 3rd Infantry Division in the U.S. Army. He saw action in North Africa, Sicily, the Anzio landing in Italy, Southern France and Germany, where his platoon was first to reach Hitler's Alpine retreat at Berchtesgaden. His decorations include the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and the Silver Star, which he received for leading a column of tanks through a minefield in Italy while under enemy fire. He was Regional Sales Manager for International Silver Co. in New York City for 35 years, retiring in 1984. He became an avid bridge player after playing bridge commuting on the train. He continued to love and play duplicate bridge for many years. In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by three daughters, Melody Devlin and husband William of New Milford, CT, Lori Elgin and Cynthia Correll, both of St. Louis, MO; five granddaughters, Shauna and Danielle Devlin, Lisa Ponder, Julie Longo and Mary Elgin; and a great granddaughter, Geneva Longo. A memorial service will take place on Saturday, November 10, 2012 at 10 A.M. at Meadow Ridge Retirement Community, 100 Redding Road, Redding, CT. Burial will follow with military honors at Flanders Cemetery, Flanders Lane, Kent, CT. Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, CT is in charge of arrangements. Contributions in his memory may be made to Regional Hospice and Home Care of Western CT, 405 Main Street, Danbury, CT 06810 and to VA CT Healthcare System, West Haven Campus, 950 Campbell Avenue, West Haven, CT 06516 (Attn: Voluntary Services).
