Charles Barlow Obituary

Barlow, Charles
Charles (Charlie) Beach Barlow of New Milford, CT, passed away peacefully in New Milford Hospital on Sunday December 18, 2016 at the age of 90. A long time resident of New Milford, Mr. Barlow will be remembered for his active support of the community and surrounding towns. His generosity may only be surpassed by his style, carrying on the traditions of the past at his historic colonial home, one of the last remaining residences on the New Milford Green. Known for the suit and tie he wore each day, Charlie's formal attire never masked the kindness of the tremendous heart he carried underneath.
Charles Barlow was born May 5, 1926 in Bridgeport, CT, son of the late Herbert W. and Marian (Beach) Barlow. After graduating from New Milford High School and the Phillips Academy in Andover, MA, Charlie served two years with the U.S. Army Military Intelligence in Manila and Tokyo. Upon returning to the states, he completed his undergraduate degree at Yale University and his Masters in Business Administration at Harvard University.
Charlie's professional career in investment banking was extensive beginning with a seven-year term as assistant treasurer for Worcester County Trust Company in Worcester, MA and continuing with executive positions stateside with Girard Bank in Philadelphia, PA, Colonial Bancorp in Waterbury, CT, and New Milford Saving Bank in New Milford, CT and overseas with Girard Bank and Noel Alexander Associates in London. Charlie formed lifetime friendships with many of his professional colleagues and relished his annual birthday reunions with the Philadelphia crew.
In 1973, Charlie became President and Director of the CM Beach Company of New Milford, CT, a company founded by his grandfather. He went on to form Taylor House Investment Management in 1982, where he continued his daily office visits as President and Executive Director until his recent illness.
Charlie's philanthropy was widespread and focused on historical preservation, healthcare, and support for the arts. He was an active member of the New Milford Historical Society, carrying on the tradition of his father before him, and was instrumental in the construction of a new building wing in 2006. Other charitable service included positions with the New Milford Hospital Foundation, the Connecticut Community Foundation, Hunt Hill Farm Trust, Weantinogue Heritage, New Milford Cemetery Association, Children's Center of New Milford, The Eliot Pratt Education Center, The Antiquarian and Landmark's Society, Merryall Center for the Arts, Goodspeed Opera House, and the Town of New Milford Tricentennial celebration.
Charlie was a member of the First Congregational Church of New Milford, CT, St. Ann's Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport, ME, St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Marbledale, CT, and Christ Church in Philadelphia, PA.
Among Charlie's favorite activities were entertaining family and friends at his "Treetops" summer home in Kennebunk, ME and at his permanent residence on the New Milford Green. He also loved travel, theatre and sailing.
Charlie is survived by his wife Eloisa (Tello) Barlow of New Milford, CT, his sister Marion "Tibby" Brown and her husband Marcy of San Francisco, CA, and his nephew Marcy Kent Brown. Charlie's first wife, Jean Wellington Barlow predeceased him in 2000.
A funeral service will be held on Friday December 30th at 11:00 am at the First Congregational Church in New Milford, CT, followed by the interment at Center Cemetery in New Milford, CT. Family and friends may call at the Lillis Funeral Home, 58 Bridge Street, New Milford, CT on Thursday December 29th from 5:00pm to 8:00pm.
Contributions in Charlie's memory may be made to the New Milford Trust for Historical Preservation, PO Box 274, New Milford CT 06776.
