Helen P. Staton STAUNTON

Helen L. (Painter) Staton, 84, of Thomas Street, Staunton, formerly of Betsy Bell Road, died Sunday, November 22, 2009, at Envoy of Staunton.

She was born January 24, 1925, in Augusta County, a daughter of the late James A. and Annie P. (Wood) Painter.

Before retiring from Western State Hospital in 1990, she was employed by Genesco from 1952 until 1977.

She was a member of Third Presbyterian Church. She was also a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Auxiliary 680, the American Legion Auxiliary Post 13, and AARP Gypsy Hill Chapter 3972.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Wade A. and Loretta Staton of Staunton; a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia M. and Eddie Thompson of Staunton; three sisters and a brother-in-law, Clara P. Shreckhise and Frances P. Coffey, both of Staunton, and A. Jean and Jim Dickerson of Goochland; seven grandchildren, Christine Bussard, Helen "Lyn" Hart, Joseph Sheffer, Glenda Sheffer, Kathy Knight, Tammy Harris, and Eddie Thompson Jr.; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and special friends, Phyllis Howdyshell, Margaret Smith, Mae Frank, Patsy Halterman, and Dot and Mike Clayton.

She was preceded in death by a son, David A. Staton; three daughters, Thelma L. Staton, Glenna V. Staton, and Gloria S. Staton; a sister, Annie P. Owens; and a great- granddaughter, Brittany N. Engleman.

A funeral service will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, November 25, 2009, at the Henry Funeral Home Chapel by the Reverend Joseph C. Brandon and the Reverend Harold "Pete" Campbell.

Active pallbearers will be Robert "Buck" Howdyshell, Daniel Shreckhise, John Shreckhise, Stuart Powell, Danny Harris, and Mike Knight.

Honorary pallbearers will be Members of the Eagles Auxiliary, the American Legion Auxiliary, and Luther DePriest.

Interment will follow in Mt. Carmel Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, November 24, 2009, at the funeral home and other times at her daughter's home, 204 Thomas Street and her son's home, 518 Baltimore Avenue.

Memorials may be made to Third Presbyterian Church, Women of the Church, 1313 Barterbrook Road, Staunton, VA 24401.
