He was also made a Fellow of Trumbull College, one of Yale's residential undergraduate colleges, which the equivalent of the colleges of Oxford and Cambridge Universities and Harvard's houses. I am fairly sure that he was the first African American so honored at Trumbull, whose Master at the time was my father, George deForest Lord. Not certain what year it was, but it predated his election as Mayor of New Haven by a year or two.

His then wife Bess Daniels was a witness of my Baha'i marriage to my first wife in 1977, along with Howard Garey, a Baha'i French professor whose office was in Trumbull College.

Johnny unknowingly taught me at a great lesson at a young age, color of a persons skin does not make the person. A lesson I have held tightly for a very long time. Coach yelled at me a few times, stop watching Johnny run and block for him. My deepest sympathy to the Daniels family

I want to thank John. Not for being strong, dignified, proud, intelligent and joyful, but for succeeding in making us feel the same way, too. He showed us what is possible, and what is necessary to make those things possible. Few men have been able to inspire so many. I am so proud that he is my cousin.

I remember Johnny Daniels zooming by me on his way to the winning touchdown for Hillhouse on Thanksgiving Day in Yale Bowl in 1954. Who could catch him? He also was the state 100-yard dash champion.
