DAVID KING Obituary

KING, DAVID, Professor of Law, Quinnipiac University David King, Professor of Law at Quinnipiac University School of Law, died on November 15, at the age of 69, in his home in Woodbridge, CT, following a long battle with cancer. David was born on November 24, 1946 in Cleveland, OH. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1968, and was soon drafted into the US Army. He served as a sergeant at the headquarters for the 18th Military Police Brigade in Vietnam from 1969-1971. After his honorable discharge from the Army, he returned to Cleveland to attend Cleveland State University School of Law where he was on the Board of Editors of the Law Review and graduated magna cum laude. He was admitted to the Ohio Bar in 1974, and worked as an attorney at the firm of Garber, Simon & Haiman in Cleveland. He then went on to obtain an LLM from Harvard Law School in 1977 and was admitted to the Massachusetts Bar. Professor King has been a faculty member of Quinnipiac, and its predecessor, the University of Bridgeport School of Law, since 1978, during which time he also served as Interim Dean and Associate Dean. Through his almost 40 years of service to these institutions, students and faculty alike regarded him as a highly respected teacher, scholar, and leader. He taught courses in property, land use and urban planning, as well as trusts and estates, and real estate. Professor King truly loved teaching law, and his passion for it and his students was clear to anyone who walked into his classroom. Professor King was also very active in his local community. He was a board member of the New Haven Legal Assistance Association, a volunteer hearing officer for the Bridgeport and Norwalk housing authorities, and a member of the editorial board of the Connecticut Law Tribune. He served as a member the municipal Board of Finance, and as Secretary of the Planning and Zoning Commission for the town of Woodbridge. He had also served in different leadership capacities on the Regional Planning Commission for South Central CT since 1998. In addition to teaching law, David had many other passions in his full life, including a love for cooking and entertaining his friends and family, running, skiing (which he picked up only about 10 years ago), classic rock, cars, the Cleveland Browns (the mention of which usually provoked a deep sigh), reading history, and visiting Oregon. Most importantly, he was exceptionally dedicated to his wife, Diane, his children Dan and Rachel, step-children Claire and Jenifer, his eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren, his golden retriever, and his tight group of lifelong friends. As a veteran of the Vietnam War, David has requested to be inurned at Arlington National Ceremony. A memorial service will be held at a future date at Quinnipiac School of Law. In lieu of flowers, he requested that donations be made in his memory to the New Haven Legal Assistance Association.

David loved Diane. I remember when Jen was married. He gave a beautiful speech about his love for her. I know that love still endures and the vibration of his love is still around us

Very sorry to hear of the passing of Dean King. He was the absolute gentleman, professional and scholar, and was a man that I admired and respected. During my first semester of law school I was faced with the difficulty of juggling the rigors of law school while also working full time. During this period I met with Dean King on several occasions and his candid advice and inspiration will always be remembered. My deepest sympathies to the King family.

My condolences to the King family. I was a student in his Property 1 class in 1982. He was one of the most caring and respected professors that I have had the honor to know. We will all miss him.

I was a student of his in 1982, Property 1. David was a firm believer in the Socratic method; on your feet, answer confidently or else. He was Professor Kingsfield with a smile and sarcastic sense of humor. If there was any one person who was the most responsible for my success in law school (following a mediocre performance in college), it was he. He made difficult subjects understandable. When I became a Judge in 2014, he was the only professor that I contacted. He not only remembered me, but invited me to come up to speak at the University. Unfortunately, I couldnt make the scheduled date, and I wish I had. Great guy, and my best to the family, who he held in the highest regard.

I had Dean King for Trusts and Estates in 1988. Since then I have always recalled a remark he made to our class: That you did not have to be the smartest person in the room to be a good lawyer, nor the sharpest wit; but that you must always be prepared in order to be a good lawyer. I have carried that advice with me ever since. May he rest in peace and my condolences to his family.

It is with shock and sadness that I learn of Professor King's passing. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the QUSL community. He will always be part of my law school memories. Not only will I recall his Land Use Planning class fondly for his gift of teaching, but it was in that 9:00 am class one beautifully clear September morning that I learned of the horror unfolding at the World Trade Center. He turned on the TV and we watched speechlessly. May he Rest In Peace.

My condolences to the family of the man I always knew as Dean King. But it was as a professor where he impacted me. So many professors tried to intimidate or just seemed to love to hear themselves talk. Not so with Dean King. I thoroughly enjoyed his Property and Land Use classes. He really wanted his students to learn.

And I'll never forget the hospitality with which he welcomed my wife and I and several other students for a school related function at his home. I'm so sad to hear that this great man has left us but I hope his family knows the mark he left on me and so many others. I hope the grief you are feeling is tempered by the fact that he truly left the world a better place. That's all any of us can ask for. Rest In Peace Dean King. And thank you.

The world is a lesser place now. He was a scholar and a gentle man. As a professor he was engaging and so so intelligent with no arrogance. I was and still am honored to have had him as a professor, a dean and most as a friend.

Although I have had no contact with David since we were classmates at Hawken School, Class of 1964, I will always regret that we will not have another opportunity to wish Happy Birthday to each other and John Chirgwin as we all shared the same birth date. I also believe that David and I were the only members of our class to have served in Vietnam. Bon Voyage, David! My condolences to your family and loved ones.

I am a 1984 graduate of the law school. He was one of my favorite professors, as well as someone I considered to be a friend. My sincere condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

I had the privilege of dining with Dean King twice thanks to the annual PILP auction, he was not only wonderful dinner company, but a remarkable chef. If that was all that I had known of him that would be enough, but I also had him as a teacher, and in that he also excelled. His class was always filled with his wisdom and knowledge, but also lively debate, which he encouraged. I am very happy to have known him, and very sad for his family's loss.
