As Connecticut is facing the 1st biggest snow storm of the 2016 season, I am sitting here thinking of you, Dr. Mel, with your big smile and your deep rooted knowledge on what to expect with Mother Nature. You are missed this day and everyday.... RIP Dr. Mel.

I took a meteorology course with Mel. He was one of the most dedicated teachers I have ever known. He was always kind, helpful, and always explained things to his students that they were struggling with! He left a great legacy for education!!!!!

I just learned about Mel's passing, and about his long, wonderful career. We were high school classmates in Swampscott, MA, and as our 50th reunion is this year, the posting of Mel's passing gave me a deep sadness. He was such a wonderful guy, and my memories of our years together were joyful. Although I did not have contact with him after Penn State, I have just now been catching up with his life and times. My best wishes to his family, and we'll be raising a toast to Mel at our reunion, for sure!

Being a survivor I was honored to meet Dr. Mel in Norwich one cold October day at Backus hospital's Cancer survivors day. I was happy he said "Survivors can do what they want." He was cold so he took the afghan I made for him to keep warm. He made me feel great. My sincere sympathy to Mrs. Goldstein.

Your passion for the weather and also, for inspiring and helping people, plus your warm, loving, radiant smile, will continue to provide inspiration for so many who remember and love you. You did not allow disease to stop you from enjoying each day, exploring your great interest in the weather, playing the piano, and cheering us all with your warm, radiant smile. I know you'll be forecasting weather in heaven--high above the clouds.

I have just returned from vacation and I am saddened to hear of Dr. Mel's passing. About 5 years ago, my dad was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and, looking for answers to questions we had regarding this disease, we turned to Dr. Mel. He very generously called my mom and dad and talked with them for a while. For this, my family will be eternally grateful. May God Bless you Dr. Mel and my heartfelt sympathy to your family. God Speed.

I returned to CT from FL in 1998 for 5 years. Dr. Mel was such an inspiration to myself and so many others. He was a one of a kind, oh so special personality..larger than life, and oh so brave. I since returned to FL and read about his passing just yesterday. Dr. Mel, you were such a wonderful, remarkable, brave, full of life, inspirational man. You will be missed by so many that you touched. My sympathies to his family, friends, and former co-workers. I'll be seeing ya, Mel

Me son was in Yale New Haven Hos. the summer of 2009 for 3 weeks when we had the pleasure of joining Dr. Mel in the elevator. He was the nicest, most down to earth, sincere person I have ever met. He consoled us and gave us possitive feedback while riding up the elevator. I was really taken back by this because he was fighting he own battle,,,,,,,,,,God Bless you Dr. Mel (Casey fam., Clinton, Ct)

For 3 days I cried hearing the news of "Dr. Mel's" passing. Your warm smile will be sadly missed.....Your "light and Loving" will always be fondly, warmly remembered. He would've been delighted, (can see the litle grin on his face)! Rip, Lord knows you deserve it. Keeping your family in my prayers ....my deepest condolences!!!!! Gwyneth Roberts, Mystic, Ct.

Please accept my sincere condolences. I, like everyone else in Connecticut, loved seeing Dr. Mel on TV. I also had the privilege of meeting him in Guilford twice, once when I gave Laura a ride home and once when he came to talk to a group at the Community Center. I loved his story about redirecting his new boss, Governor Grasso to avoid a hurricane/tornado only to have the storm follow the governor. He will always be missed. May his memory be a blessing.

So many beautiful things said about an "always cheery man"...I've watched Dr. Mel for as long as I can remember, which is a long time. A life cut to short. But he always seemed like a real "Gentle, Gentlemen....with a wife that clearly adored him, how lucky you both were, your children also.
But at least he isn't fighting the big fight, and is finally at peace. My deepest sympathies to all of his family...including his TV, radio, etc...but he is now in the palm of the "BIG ONES HANDS" until we all meet again, Dr. Mel will rest in peace.
P.S. Please ask the "Big One" to take it easy on the bad weather...even you need a break:,)
Sincerely... Cheryl

Dr. Mel will be missed by many. I will miss him, as he was an inspiration to me, as I suffer from an illness that is incurable and has no known treatment, but of which is not life-threatening. Thinking of Dr. Mel's cancer and his battle with it, his 16 year miraculous accomplishment in that battle, has been the example of strength that he has given to me in my own struggle. For this, though he did not know, I will and shall continue to, ever be so grateful to him for. I admired his wisdom, strength & determination, in his career and in his battling cancer, and all of his great works outside of the weather station. I love you Dr. Mel! I wish I could have met you in person, because your positive energy and Spirit Light touched me, as it did to others.
May you rest in Peace. May your family be comforted by your phenomenal memory.
Blessed Be *)O(*

You didn't need to be a real family member to feel like you were one of Dr. Mel's. One felt as though you could count on him for anything, and we all did - an honest weather report devoid of shtick - only warmth. I'll miss his delightful smile and eyes that sparkled.

About 5 years ago I was told I had something that needed to be checked in my blood. I was very scared and someone told me to look up Dr Mels sight, the next thing you know he called my house, I had never met him he didn't know me and talked to me for quite a while, I will never Forget this very kind thing he did for a total stranger.

To Mrs. Goldstein and family, as well as the entire WTNH8 Team: After losing my father to Multiple Myelome in 1998, a friend sent these words to me. I hope that you can find the same comfort in them that I have since then. Dr. Mel was a great man and his legacy will live on.
IN MEMORIUM
In countless gentle, kindly ways he lived a sermon all his days. Believing in the folk he knew and making friends his lifetime through
Enjoying life, its works and fun, he sought the best in everyone. Living his faith from day to day, he sowed good seed along the way.
Now death has set his spirit free in fields of immortality, to claim a task of greater worth than any he had known on earth.
MISS ME BUT LET ME GO
When I come to the end of the road, and the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom-filled room. Why cry for a soul set free?
Miss me a little, but not for long and not with your head bowed low. Remember the love that we once shared. Miss me, but let me go.
For this is a journey that we all must take. And each must go alone. It's all a part of the Master's plan, a step on the road to home. When you are lonely and sick of heart, go to the friends we know, and bury your sorrows in doing good deeds. Miss me, but let me go.

To Arlene and Family, I wish to express my most sincere sympathy to all of you. I along with the Clinton Rotary Club had the greatest pleasure working with Dr. Mel for over 10 years at our annual Cancer Relief Fund Walk. I cannot tell you just how much it meant to have him be our "Grand Marshall" every year. We really missed him this year and we were very sad he couldn't join us, but we were even more sad to hear he was in so much distress. He was in our thoughts and prayers and will continue to be in our hearts. We promise you that we will continue to work for his efforts and continue to support his fight against cancer for as long as we are able to. He was such a great inspiration to us all and he brought "sunshine" to so many people.

After catching Dr. Mel on the radio airwaves, and seeing him first on WTXX, then on WTNH, and reading his column in the Courant, I had the pleasure of hearing him speak when he was honored by the CT Broadcasters Association last fall (after Irene, which severely damaged his home, but did not stop him from reporting live over the phone about it).
