Margaret Whittemore Obituary

WHITTEMORE, MARGARET K. SOUTH YARMOUTH - Margaret Keagy Whittemore, 93, of South Yarmouth died peacefully on Saturday, February 22, 2014 with family at her side. Born on April 12, 1920 in Cincinnati, OH, she was the daughter of the late Walter R. and Margaret (Scott) Keagy. She graduated from Connecticut College (1942) and then studied at Yale Divinity School. Margaret resided in New Haven, CT where her husband was pastor of the First Church of Christ in New Haven (“Center Church on the Green”) from 1970 to 1982. Before that, the family lived in Cincinnati, OH and Cleveland, OH (also briefly in St. Louis, MO) where her husband worked for the Council of Churches in those cities. In 1982, she moved to Brewster, MA on Cape Cod, where she and her husband joined the Federated Church of Orleans. Since 1994, she resided at Thirwood Place in South Yarmouth, MA. “Peg” was always very active in her church communities and church women’s groups; she also helped start handbell choirs at Center and Federated. While her daughters were young, she was active in Girl Scouts as a troop leader.In addition to her parents, she was also predeceased by her beloved husband, the Reverend Benjamin Bruce Whittemore, and her son Robert B. Whittemore.She is survived by her three children, Janice W. White of Lindfield, England, W. Scott Whittemore of Brooklyn, NY, Emily C. Whittemore of South Yarmouth, MA, and two grandchildren, Heidi L. Whittemore of Mentor, OH and Christopher W. White of Lindfield, England. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at Center Church on the Green, Temple Street in New Haven, CT and at 10:30 am on Friday, March 21, 2014 at Federated Church of Orleans, 162 Main Street in East Orleans, MA. Burial beside her husband in Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven, CT will be private. Donations in Margaret’s memory may be made to the Federated Church of Orleans (Memo: Local Mission Fund), P.O. Box 761, East Orleans, MA02643; the Cape Cod Council of Churches, P.O. Box 758, Hyannis, MA 02601; or Christian Community Action, 168 Davenport Avenue, New Haven, CT 06519.
