WHITLOCK, REVERDY ROBERT HALE Reverdy Robert Hale Whitlock died Friday April 8, peacefully, at his home in Woodbridge. Born May 27, 1913, he was predeceased by his wife of 70 years, Martha Russell Whitlock, and is survived by three devoted daughters, Deborah (Patrick) Madden, Martha (Grey) Freeman and Susan Ballou, 8 loving grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and one brother, Manson Whitlock. Reverdy was a charter member of the Woodbridge Club, a deacon and church historian of the First Church of Christ in Woodbridge, President of the Amity-Woodbridge Historical Society, and a member of the Woodbridge Board of Selectman. He graduated from Hillhouse High School and Yale, class of 1935. He was a fellow of Saybrook College and a longtime member of Mory's, the Yale Club of New Haven, and the Elizabethan Club. He was president of the New Haven Colony Historical Society, the New Haven Preservation Trust, and the Connecticut Trust for Historical Preservation, as well as serving on the New Haven Council of Churches. Reverdy was owner and sole proprietor of Whitlock's Bookstore in New Haven, founded by his father in 1900. He authorized six histories, including The Parish of Amity and By Grit and Grace, The First One Hundred Years of Westminster School, as well as numerous family memoires. He was an avid historian and raconteur who cherished his family and country life in Bethany and Woodbridge. Services will be private at the request of the family. Arrangements are with the Hawley Lincoln Memorial, 493 Whitney Avenue, New Haven.

I used to walk up to Whitlock's bookstore during my lunch break to chat with Reverdy and to see if he had located a book I was looking for. Before Amazon tracking down special editions of books by favorite authors was an art and an adventure. I cherish those memories and those books Reverdy helped me find.
