I knew John Hayslett as a colleague and friend for all my professional life at Yale. He was a wise and compassionate physician, a relevant investigator and an excellent teacher. His final illness was difficult and he met the challenge with exemplary bravery. Our condolences to his loving family.

Dr. Hayslett was a true "gentleman". He was meticulous regarding science, meticulous about his hobbies (sailing and hiking), and meticulous about his hair and beard! His presence inspired us to be smarter, to look better, to stand up straighter. He simply inspired greatness. No one in their right mind would want to let down this great man. He had such a kind soul and was compassionate to the people with whom he came in contact. Although I learned a great deal of nephrology and medicine from him, I had so many great conversations with him about life in general and non-medical topics. One of my fondest conversations with him was in 2005 during my renal fellowship, in the VA hospital courtyard at one of the tables in the sun after we rounded on our patients. We were talking about the philopatric nature of Albatrosses, despite the fact that they often take very long (e.g., circumpolar) flights in between breeding! It was so fascinating, and I was in just in awe to be discussing this type of topic with a man of such stature in medicine! He has touched the lives of so many people. We will always remember and love Dr. Hayslett.

I had a rare opportunity to share office space with Dr. Hayslett three years ago when I joined the Nephrology faculty. I came to know him as a very caring and loving person!!! He loved to discuss science and would always ask me about the progress of my own research projects! I wish him peace and my sincere condolences to his family !!
