Salvatore Giaimo

Salvatore B. Giaimo, 87, formerly of Van Rose Drive, North Haven, entered into eternal rest on Monday, January 28, 2013. He was the widower of Anna Naclerio Giaimo. Sal was born in New Haven on August 15, 1925 to the late Nicola and Maria Grazia Giaimo. He leaves four children: Sr. Mary Grace Giaimo, ASCJ of Rome, Italy; Nicholas Giaimo of North Haven; Luisa Giaimo and her husband Robert Lenart of North Haven; and Albin Giaimo of Rocky Hill. In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by sisters Mary DeLucia, Yolanda (Angie) Sannicandro, and Virginia Giaimo. He also leaves several nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Sal grew up in New Haven, where he helped run the family-owned grocery store, Farnham Courts. He was active in the Boy Scouts into his adult years. He proudly served his country from 1943 to 1945 as an aviation cadet in the Army Air Corps, and graduated from Yale University in 1949 with a degree in Economics. He met Anna Naclerio in 1947 through a mutual friend. They married in 1953 and made their home with their children in North Haven, where Sal lived until 2008. In 1985, he retired from the IRS after 25 years of service in the Bridgeport and New Haven offices. He then worked at Sacred Heart Academy as Business Manager for several years. He was a faithful communicant of St. Rita Parish in Hamden. Sal was a lover of music, especially Italian opera. He shared this passion with his late wife and many life-long friends. Even as his mental state diminished, he responded joyfully – singing, smiling, and tapping his feet - to music from his past. The family extends sincere gratitude to the staffs of Whitney Manor in Hamden and Maplewoods in Hamden for their warm and kind care to Sal during his declining years, and to the St. Raphael staff for their expertise, support, and friendship in the final days. The family sends special thanks to cousin Bob DeLucia and Uncle Eddie Naclerio for their faithful and loving visits to Sal over many years, right up until the end.
Funeral from MARESCA & SONS FUNERAL HOME, 592 Chapel St., Friday at 10:15. Mass of Christian burial in St. Rita Church at 11am. Burial with military honors in All Saints Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday from 4-8.
