Gustav Ranis Obituary

Gustav Ranis, Professor Emeritus at Yale University, died October 15 at age 83. He was born in Darmstadt, Germany to Max and Bettina Ranis October 24, 1929. Gustav left Germany for Cuba in October 1941, travelling with his mother and younger brother, Peter as the borders closed behind them. In 1952 Gustav was valedictorian of Brandeis University's first graduating class. After earning his PhD from Yale (1956) in Economics, Gustav worked for the Ford Foundation in Pakistan from 1958-1961 as Director of the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics. He returned to Yale as a professor, serving as the Director for the Economic Growth Center. He was the chief economist for AID, 1966-68, and later consulted with the World Bank, the United Nations Development Programme, and the Brookings Institute. Gustav is survived by his wife of 55 years Rachel Ranis, his children Michael and Jonathan Ranis and Bettina Altschuler, and his grandchildren Benjamin and Daniel Altschuler, Hanna and Sasha Ranis.
Services will be at Congregation Or Shalom at 205 Old Grassy Hill Road, Orange, CT on Thursday, October 17, at 10:30am. Shiva times are Thursday evening until 8pm, Friday 11-2 pm, Saturday 7-9 pm, and Sunday 11-8 pm. Memorial donations in Gustav's name may be made to Brandeis University. Funeral arrangements in care of Robert E. Shure Funeral Home, New Haven.

To dearest Rachel, Michael, Jonathan and Bettina, all my love and best wishes. There are no possible words to capture the sense of loss Julia, Ethan and I feel at the news of Gus' passing. Celebrating him and all he accomplished is all we can do.
