Steve Sutton Obituary

STILLWATER - Steve G. Sutton, 53, of Stillwater, died Sunday, Aug. 21, 2011, at his home in the Swartswood section of Stillwater. Born in Newton, he was the son of the late Roy and Lore C. (Cassimore) Sutton Jr. Steve grew up in Lafayette before moving to Stillwater, where he lived for more than 25 years.

Steve worked as a corrections officer with the Sussex County Sheriff's Department, where he was instrumental in the creation of the SWAP and SLAP programs. He retired at the rank of lieutenant after 25 years of service. He was a member of PBA Local No. 138 and PBA Local No. 378. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed the time he would spend with his family and friends in the outdoors. He also was a history buff and was a life member of the Sussex County Historical Society, where he was formerly on the Board of Trustees.

He is survived by his loving wife of 31 years, Laurie (Bush) Sutton, of Swartswood; a son, Steven Sutton and his wife, Casey, of Allamuchy; a daughter, Stacey Monahan and her husband, Travis, of Stillwater; a grandchild, Keegan Monahan; and a brother, Lester Sutton and his wife, Deborah, of Wantage. He also is survived by three nephews, one niece and many loving friends.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Friday at 10 a.m., meeting directly at the Lafayette Federated Church, Lafayette. Visitation will be held Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at F. John Ramsey Funeral Home, Franklin. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations would be preferred and may be made to the Sussex County Historical Society, P.O. Box 913 Newton, NJ 07860 (President Dennis Pegg, 973-383-6010) or the COPD Foundation, 2937 SW 27th Ave., Suite 302 Miami, FL 33133.

Steve as a Corrections Officer was one of the kindest guys one could hope to meet. He always smiled and would give encouraging up-beat advice. 1985 was when I got to know him at Sussex County.

I was shocked and saddened to learn such a good family man, Father, friend and all around funny true"Man" like Steve had passed. As a police officer in Stillwater, I had many opportunities to be with Steve, Lori and their family and enjoyed every single minute of being part of their lives. Even though it has been a long long time since we have seen each other, I still have you in my heart, thoughts & prayers. God must have surely needed a special angel.
