Sigmund Borstad Obituary

VERNON - Sigmund Borstad, 53, died Friday, Oct. 26, 2012, at his home in McAfee.

Mr. Borstad was born in Staten Island, N.Y., Nov., 1958, moving to Vernon in 1961. Upon graduating from Vernon Township High School in 1977, Sig moved to the state of Washington where he lived for 10 years before returning to Vernon.

Upon his return to Vernon, Sig continued to work as a cabinet maker and carpenter before opening Sig Borstad Archery and Hunting Supply in McAfee in 1997. He became a certified archery coach and instructor, and volunteered his time as an archery instructor for the 4-H Club and more recently for the Vernon PAL.

Mr. Borstad also was an integral part of the family business, "Viking Village," in McAfee where he was actively working up to the present time. Sig loved nature, just being in the woods brought him joy; thus, he was an avid hunter and fisherman. He was hunting up until the day before his death.

Following a snow ski accident that left Sig handicapped 24 years ago, he maintained a positive attitude, trying to set an example for others.

Mr. Borstad is survived by his parents, Daniel C. and Margaret (Lindstrom) Borstad, of McAfee; sister, Mary-Ann Borstad, of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; three nieces and a large family in Norway.

An open house to celebrate Sig's life will be held Sunday, Nov. 11, from noon on, at Sig Borstad Archery and Hunting Supply, Old Rudetown Road, McAfee. Arrangements have been entrusted to Ferguson-Vernon Funeral Home, 241 Route 94, Vernon. Condolences may be sent to www.fergusonvernonfuneralhome.com.

Can't believe it's been so long- Sig you are missed. I learned all the basics about fletching arrows from you and you always had time to help me learn to tune and shoot my recurves and longbows. Prayers you are at peace.

Sig was a mentor and a friend and inspiration. He wasn't just a hunter, he was an exceptional archer that practiced the sport using traditional equipment- the wooden recurves and longbows employed by archers for thousands of years- and gladly passed on whatever assistance he could to others that enjoy the pursuit. Thank you Sig for all you did.

I am so sad to hear about your lose. It has been many years since I saw Sig but over the years thought of him and your family. Whenever I ever think about skiing (which I don't) I think Of Sig cause he did try to teach me and he was the only person I ever skiied with. He was a great guy as you all know.
