Samuel Schimel Obituary

SCHIMEL
Samuel H., C.P.A, passed away April 27, 2013 at his home in Florida, at the age of 91. He was born in Jersey City, NJ, a son of the late David and Sarah "Sadie" Friedman Schimel. A founding partner of Schimel, Borenstein & Mazzei, P.A., "Sam" served as an Air Force Pilot during World War II and became a POW after his plane (a B-17 Bomber) was shot down over Germany. He is the proud recipient of the Purple Heart as well as Pilot's Wings and World War II Combat, Air, and Prisoner of War medals. His courage during those years was evident throughout his lifetime and has been documented in the book Extraordinary Lives, published by American Express in 2008. Sam was known for his honesty, integrity and a keen sense of humor. Whether working, spending time with family and friends, or on the golf course, Sam took pride in cultivating and nurturing life-long relationships. His curiosity and thirst for knowledge was diverse (from travel to historical matters to current affairs), of which one example is his graduation from the William Alanson White Institute's Two Year Program in Organizational Consultation and Development. Sam is survived by Dr. Marylou Lionells Schimel, his wife of 44 years; his daughter Marjorie (and her husband, Leonard) Borenstein; his daughter Dale (and her late husband, Alan) Mazzei; children from his first marriage to the late Bernice Miller Schimel; his granddaughter, Holly (and her husband, Rob, and children Ryan, Tyler and Aidan) Friedsam; his granddaughter, Sara (and her husband, Greg and daughter, Kelly) Reichert; and his grandson, Bret (and his wife, Ashley and son, Zachary) Mazzei. Sam was a husband, a father, a grandfather, a great-grandfather, a friend and a mentor to us all. He will be missed. Donations can be made, in lieu of flowers, to the One Fund Boston. A celebration of his life will be held 10:15 AM on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Gutterman and Musicant Funeral Home (Hackensack, New Jersey) followed by an entombment at Garden of Memories, Township of Washington, New Jersey.
