Joseph Staub Obituary

STAUB
Joseph W., 70, of Allendale, formerly of Upper Saddle River, NJ, passed away suddenly on December 26, 2011. Born in Paterson, he grew up in Midland Park. Joe was a proud member of the first graduating class of Midland Park High School in 1959. He graduated from Montclair State College in 1963 and was inducted into the Montclair State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1974. He pursued graduate studies, while coaching, at Appalachian State in North Carolina and Springfield College in Massachusetts. Joe was a Navy veteran, trained at the Naval Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, commissioned an ensign, and served two tours of duty as a Lieutenant J.G. on the USS Tripoli, a helicopter carrier, during the Vietnam War. Before entering the Navy, Joe began his teaching career in Clifton, NJ. Upon returning from service, he taught in the Ridgewood Public Schools for many years until retiring in 1996. He raised his family in Upper Saddle River and Allendale.
Joe, with his "golden hands", was a skillful carpenter and builder. After running his own contracting company for many years, Joe began a new career, becoming the founder and president of Staub Home Inspection, affording him the pleasure of teaching people about their buildings. He was a member of the Allendale Chamber of Commerce. He served in both the Upper Saddle River and Allendale Volunteer Fire Departments while residing in those communities. He was a volunteer with the Elizabeth-Carter Association in Point Pleasant Beach. A superior athlete, Joe was an avid skier, runner, and biker. He participated in the earliest NYC and Long Island Marathons, was an early member of the Ridgewood Road Runners, a founding member of the Town Journal Run and the Park Ridge Bicycle Club. He filled a room with his laughter and conversation. He was a strong man with outstanding leadership and problem solving skills, who worked extraordinarily hard and seemed to make impossible feats realities. His far-reaching kindness was spread selflessly to family and friends.
Joseph is predeceased by his mother, Helen, his father, Joseph, and his sister, Lois Roughgarden. He leaves behind his three children, Nicholas, Carolyn, and Jesse Staub, his sister's children, Julie and Richard Roughgarden, his beloved Ann D'Agostino and her children, Lisa, Rob, Carla, Paul, and grandchildren, Ethan, Lucas, and Abigail.
Joe, a firm believer in medical research to advance cures for future generations, instructed his remains be donated to the University of Medicine and Dentistry of NJ. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, December 31, 2011, at 12 noon, the Church of the Guardian Angel, 320 Franklin Turnpike, Allendale, NJ, with a repast to follow in the church auditorium.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: New Jersey Veterans Memorial Home, One Veterans Drive, Paramus, NJ 07652 or Allendale Boy Scout Troop 59, c/o Mark Dworkin, Scoutmaster, 108 Elmwood Ave., Allendale, NJ 07401.

Joe was so upbeat and always looked at the positive side of life. I always laughed when he was around. I'm sorry I did not know about his death until I just thought about him now while in Oregon. I thought of him often after moving here and wondered how his cycling was going. I hope he did not suffer. Ann, I send my thoughts and sympathy to you. He will be missed. Eileen Holzman

Joey as I knew him was my neighbor when I was a child. I remember my parents droping him off when he enlisted. Driving in a '59 Buick electra Just like his Dad had in black. I remember he swapped a pair of skis with me ( I had the Head pair) he waited. He would drive me around in the dune buggy he used and sometimes we would go to one of his construction jobs. He would eventually buy our house(34 cross ave, mp) when my parents moved to NH. That's how I prefer to remember him, young, strong, athletic and full of life. My sincere thoughts and prayers.

Joe was sweet, kind and full of advice. He lead me through the maze of my first home inspection and was kind enough to listen and answer all of my crazy "apartment girl" questions. I hope my husband and I have as loving a relationship as Joe and Ann did. He will be missed.

After reading about Mr. Staubs life, interests and accomplishments, I only wish I had met the man. I work with Carolyn and can see that she inherited many of her dad's traits and abilities. It may come as a small comfort to know that your friends are thinking of you and the entire Staub family, and keeping you in our prayers.

I met Joe when I was a student at Ridgewood High School and then we reconnected after college. As athletes we had a lot in common and never ran out of things to talk about. I can't remember a time I left him not feeling better. He always made me laugh. I will miss him.

I always considered Joe Staub to be a bit of a mentor. He was my gym teacher and coach at BF in the early 70s. I wasn't exactly a model citizen, but he saw something in me and encouraged me to come out for soccer, and to become a student gym aide. I always respected him for taking the time to be firm yet caring with me. I wish that I could have spoken with him later in life to let him know the impact that he had. He was a good man. May his family have comfort in knowing that he touched at least one life (although I'm sure there were many more), and may he rest in peace in God's loving embrace.

may you have peace and be as productive up there as you were down here.

Dear Ann and all the family,

Every Christmas we remember Joe so fondly, as he was like a great uncle to my children during the short time he lived next door on White Terrace. The children would run to greet him when he pulled into his driveway. He would come over on Christmas Eve....very late....and help us put together all the toys which Santa had brought for us to assemble and put under the tree. After he moved, he always found time during the busy holiday season to drop by for a little cheer. After we moved to Georgia, he always included a note in his Christmas card to update us on all the family.....especially Jesse, whom we remember fondly.

May his loving spirit be with all of you, always.
