LEONARD
Michael George 68, of Ridgefield, NJ, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Friday, April 29, 2016 following a valiant battle with leukemia.
Michael was born on March 5, 1948 to the late Michael and Anna Leonard. He graduated from Cliffside Park High School in 1966 and went on to enlist in the United States Navy. He served as an Electronics Technician at the Naval Communications Station in Honolulu, Hawaii.
After the Navy, Michael returned to work for the Port Authority of NY & NJ and went on to become the Electrical Supervisor at the George Washington Bridge, where among other duties, he kept the necklace lights lit, and had the honor of hanging the world's largest free-flying American flag on patriotic holidays. He retired at the age of 52 after more than 30 years of service.
Michael was known to his family and friends as someone who could build or fix just about anything. His hobbies included amateur radio, RC helicopters, and woodworking. He kept a sailboat on the Hudson River for many years and enjoyed spending time on the water with his children as well as the camaraderie of his friends at the marina. He was a member of the American Legion Post 221 in Ridgefield, and for a time, was one of the regulars around their bar. He was appreciated by loved ones and friends for his vast knowledge and sound advice on a variety of topics. Many will remember his one-of-a-kind personality, unique sense of humor, and ability to turn a phrase.
Michael is survived by his son Michael, daughter-in-law Jennifer, and grandsons Justin and Jake of Wyckoff, daughter Sara and son-in-law Kevin of Freehold, former wife and close friend Joyce, of Ridgefield, and sister Judith of Maywood, in addition to many other relatives and friends.
The deceased was memorialized by his family according to his wishes. No formal services will be held. Those who knew him well will not be surprised by his "Irish Goodbye."
