James GALLOWAY Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 27, 2010.
GALLOWAY James Thomas, a longtime resident of Teaneck on March 26, 2010. Loving husband of Virginia. Devoted father of Kim and her husband Robert Ahearn, James P. and his wife So Young Lee and Justine. Cherished grandfather of Liam and Daniel Ahearn. James was born on April 10, 1940 in Brooklyn, NY to a family of Scottish immigrants. His grandfather and father, both named James Galloway, immigrated from Dumbarton, Scotland and they both worked in the Brooklyn shipyards during World War II. Following in the family tradition of building, James became a civil engineer after attending Mount Assumption High School in Plattsburgh NY and Manhattan College. He spent his career working on numerous infrastructure projects in the New York Metropolitan area, including the 1970's expansion of Newark Airport. James struggled for many years with early onset of Parkinson's Disease and was active in many Parkinson's Disease organizations. He also participated in many experimental treatments and was one of the earliest patients to receive deep brain stimulation to relieve the disease's symptoms. According to his wishes, James' family has donated his brain to Columbia University for research purposes to help further the work of combating Parkinson's. Prior to his diagnosis with Parkinson's, James was a runner and completed 5 marathons with his best time being 3:34 minutes. He was also an avid skier and, in fact, met Virginia his wife of 43 years on a skiing trip in Stowe, Vermont. He passed his love of running and skiing onto his children all of whom are runners of marathons and half-marathons and expert skiers. James' other loves included sweets and Brandy Alexanders. Friends may call at the Barrett Funeral Home 148 Dean Drive Tenafly on Sunday 2-4 and 7-9 PM. Funeral Mass Monday 9:30 AM St. Therese R.C. Church Cresskill. Interment private. The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself ... any man's death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
