Charles Mazoujian Obituary

MAZOUJIAN Charles, a long time (50 year) resident of Tenafly died on January 14, 2011 in Sacramento, CA where his daughter lives. The cause was a heart attack. He was 93 years old. Mr Mazoujian was an artist his entire life. He began drawing as a child where he grew up in West New York. He graduated in 1939 from Pratt Institute in NY. He joined other young artists working for Will Eisner where he created the "Lady Luck" comic originally modeled after his fiancée, then Edna Monson, who wore a stylish green hat. During WWII, he was a warrant officer in the Army and illustrated intelligence military manuals in Washington, DC. Mr. Mazoujian returned to NY to teach painting and figure drawing at Pratt Institute night school. He did freelance illustration which was predominantly book illustration and commissioned paintings. In the early 1960's, he worked as an illustrator for Ogilvy and Mather Advertising Agency in New York City. He was a long time member of the Society of Illustrators in NY and actively participated in the US Air Force art program. His paintings have appeared in American Watercolor Society shows, Life Magazine, and Society of Illustrators shows in addition to receiving prizes. After retirement Mr. Mazoujian continued to paint both landscape watercolors and oil paintings. He did many commissioned portraits. In 2002, he moved to Tucson, AZ where his son, Craig, an engineer and daughter-in-law Nancy live. He later moved in 2007 to Sacramento, CA where his daughter, Gwen, a physician, and son-in-law, Darrow Haagensen also a physician, live. Mr. Mazoujian continued to paint until his death. He is survived by his son Craig and daughter Gwen. Edna, his wife of 50 years, had previously died in Tenafly in 1992. Memorial services will be held on Saturday April 2, 2011, 9:30 AM at The Church of the Atonement, 97 Highwood Ave. at Engle St. in Tenafly.
