Joseph Frost Obituary

Joe Frost Mets fan, master kielbasa maker and Clifton's oldest resident died Monday, seven days after celebrating his 108th birthday.

"His doctor always asked him, 'Hey, Joe, why are you living such a long life?' and Joe would say, 'You're the doctor you tell me!'x" said a nephew, Bill Frisch.

Mr. Frost and his doctor settled on a reason: Because Mr. Frost never married, he didn't have to contend with a mother-in-law.

Joseph Frost was one of eight children of a Hungarian mother and a Lithuanian father. The family moved to Clifton from Passaic when he was 12 years old.

Mr. Frost, a Navy veteran of World War II, worked at the family's Frost Market on Van Houten Avenue and made small batches of kielbasa in the smokehouse out back.

"They all raved about Uncle Joe's kielbasa, and people would come from Pennsylvania for it," Frisch said.

Mr. Frost kept the grocery going until about 20 years ago.

He lived independently on Sunnycrest Avenue until 2011, the year officials in Clifton gave him a key to the city and a proclamation.

Mr. Frost, who proudly wore |a New York Mets cap and steadfastly attended religious services at the Clifton Jewish Center, |lived his last 14 months at the Daughters of Miriam Center in Clifton.

The funeral will be today at noon at Jewish Memorial Chapel, Clifton.
