Lewis Gochenour Obituary

Lewis Ford Gochenour, 82, peacefully passed away on Friday, January 1, 2010 surrounded by family at his residence on Ridgeley Road in Woodstock. The funeral will be held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at Valley Pike Church of the Brethren located at 83 Headley Road, Maurertown. Reverends Bill Garber and George Bowers will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Mr. Gochenour was born July 5, 1927 in the home place in Woodstock, son of the late Roy Milton and Emma Rebecca Peer Gochenour. He was a lifelong successful full time farmer and custom harvester for over 50 years. He owned and operated a family farm and operated a Grade A Dairy with Tom Eagle and two Grade B Dairies. In 1991, the Lewis Gochenour Family was named Outstanding Farm Family by the St. Luke-Fairview Ruritan Club. He was an active member of Valley Pike Church of the Brethren, served on the Southern States Board and was a member of Virginia Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, whom he married on June 24, 1950, Eva Lorraine Racey Gochenour, daughter of Carl Guy and Allie Mae Plaugher Racey; two sons, Garlan Lewis Gochenour and his wife, Sherry Stephens Gochenour of Woodstock and Guy Milton Gochenour and his wife, Wendy Dove Gochenour of Woodstock; daughter, Gloria Lorraine Gochenour Steele and her husband, Keith Allen Steele of Woodstock; nine grandchildren, Michael Lewis Gochenour, Joseph Andrew Gochenour, Matthew Ryan Gochenour, Alexander Scott Gochenour, Allie Michelle Gochenour, Guy Evan Gochenour, Benjamin Eli Gochenour, Olivia Faith Gochenour and Noah Lewis Steele; three step grandchildren, Keith Eugene Steele, Joe Allen Steele, and Brittany Nicole Steele.

He was preceded in death by a brother, David Gochenour and two sisters, Grace Ellen Gochenour Ryman and Betty Jane Gochenour Edmonds.

Pallbearers will be Michael Gochenour, Joseph Gochenour, Matthew Gochenour, Alexander Gochenour, Jonathan Ryman and Phillip Hockman.

Honorary pallbearers will be Harry Ryman Jr., Ron Combs, Harold "Dukie" Racey, Melvin Racey, Kenny Hamrick, Alfred Bowers, Doug Edmonds, Lacy Rush and Roy Wimmer.

The family will receive friends today from 6-8 p.m. at the Valley Pike Church of the Brethren, 3 miles north of Woodstock.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Love Fund at Valley Pike Church of the Brethren, P.O. Box 215, Maurertown, Va. 22644 or Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Winchester, Va. 22601.

I remember working with and for Lewis as a young teen, driving his big Farmall "M". He did a lot of custom farm work for Dad and several other neighbors on the Backroad. A good man who will be always remembered for his fairness, honesty and hard work. Our condolences to Eva and family.
