Herbert Sluder Obituary

Herbert Lamar Sluder, age 75, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away on September 6, 2012 at home.

He was born December 10, 1936 in Shady Valley, Tennessee, the son of Letha Wright Sluder and the late Otis Sluder.

In addition to his father, Herbert was preceded in death by his daughter, Michele Lynne Sluder and brothers, Cline Leon Sluder and Curtis Earl Sluder.

Herbert attended Carson Newman College from 1956­58. In 1959 he joined the Army and served in the 712th Medical Company BAMC at Fort Sam Houston, Texas until 1962. He returned to Tennessee to graduate from East Tennessee State University in 1963 with a Bachelors degree in Biology and Environmental Health. In 1964, Herbert was employed by the Lord Fairfax Health District. He retired as an Environmental Health Supervisor in 1991.

He was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Winchester, Virginia. He served on both the Administrative Management and Hunting Ridge Retreat committees. He was also a member of the Singing Seniors Choir and the Friendship Sunday Class. Herbert also spent many hours driving for Faith in Action in Winchester.

Herbert is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Lou Jenkins Sluder; son, Gavin Craig Sluder of Dover, Delaware; daughter, Patricia Gayle Santiago and son-in-law Andre Marvin Santiago and grandsons Garrett Dean Santiago and Alec Logan Santiago, all of Rockville, Maryland; mother, Letha Opal Wright Sluder of Shady Valley, Tennessee; brothers, Alton Lowell Sluder and wife Shirley Jones Sluder and Kenneth Allen Sluder and wife Eula Deel Sluder, sister-in-law, Kathy Wallace, sister-in-law, Linda Burgess Sluder, all of Shady Valley, Tennessee; aunt, Ruby Wright Testerman of Vinton, Virginia; sister-in-law, Edith Mae Jenkins of Shady Valley, Tennessee; brother-in-law, Edsel Claude Jenkins and wife June Jenkins of Bristol, Tennessee; brother-in-law, Herbert Ralph Jenkins and wife Bessie Jenkins of Mountain City, Tennessee; and numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Blue Ridge Hospice and the Greenwood Fire & Rescue Company, as well as other health care professionals that assisted the family and Herbert during his illness.

A funeral service will be held at First Baptist Church, 105 W. Piccadilly, Winchester, VA 22601 on Monday, September 10, 2012 at 3:00 p.m. A graveside service will be held at the Blevins Cemetery in Shady Valley, Tennessee.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the following: the Hunting Ridge Retreat Fund at First Baptist Church, 105 W. Piccadilly, Winchester, VA 22601; Faith in Action, 333 West Cork Street, #727, Winchester, VA 22601; Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, #405, Winchester, VA 22601; or Greenwood Fire & Rescue Company, P.O. Box 3023, Winchester, VA 22604.
