Edgar Marvin "Ed" Munyon obituary, 1921-2010, Niceville, FL

Edgar Munyon Obituary

Ed, a longtime resident of Niceville, Fla., went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010.
Originally from Marceline, Mo., he grew up on a farm and attended high school and the First Christian Church there. In 1942, Ed received an appointment to the Military Academy at West Point. At West Point he earned a degree in military engineering, pilot wings, and two national championships in track. Upon graduation from West Point in 1945 he was ordered to the South Pacific, where he logged over 3,000 flying hours.
Most of Ed's military career was in the scientific, research and development areas. In 1966, Ed was promoted to colonel and assigned to the Air Force Weapons Laboratory in Albuquerque as Vice Commander. In conjunction with this assignment, Ed served in Con Thien, Vietnam, with the First Marine Infantry Division. His distinguished military career spanned 35 years and garnered many decorations, including four Legions of Merit, a Bronze Star, and two Air Force Commendation Medals. Ed was also a Command Pilot and Master Missileman. In addition to his degree from West Point, he earned master's degrees in nuclear chemistry from Ohio State University and international affairs from George Washington University. Upon retirement, Ed was a consultant to several aerospace companies and operated Rocky Bayou Farms horse stable. Ed's hobbies included fishing and genealogy.
Ed was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Young Munyon. Ed met Shirley at West Point and married before his deployment to the South Pacific. This union produced six children, 17 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Ed is survived by his sister, Frances White of Pine Mountain, Ga.; sons, Larry and Lynn Munyon; and daughters, Cindy Barksdale, Susie Wood, Sandy Fabre and Kelly DeAngelo. Ed often remarked how proud he was of his large family, including his sons and daughters-in-law.
A visitation for Ed will be held at Twin Cities Cremation Services and Funeral Home, 1405 John Sims Parkway East, Niceville, on Friday, Aug. 13, from 2 to 3 p.m., with a memorial service at 3 p.m. At 4 p.m. a graveside service, with military honors, will follow at Beal Memorial Cemetery in Fort Walton Beach, Fla.
Twin Cities Cremation Services and Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memories and condolences may be left at www.twincitiescremationsfunerals.com on the obituary page.

Col Munyon was a full colonel with I met him in 1962-3, as the father of my best school friend Larry. Larry and I are still friends as of 2020. Ed and Shirley were down to earth and were comfortable arguing in front of us kids, which was excellent role modeling for me.

I am indebted to Col. Munyon, for the sterling recommendation to Officer Candidate School he wrote for me in 1967. My Army OCS Tac Officers must have been swayed by recommendations coming from my friend's dads: a Lieutenant General, Rear Admiral. and Col. Ed Munyon.

Thanks Ed. Richard Allen Walker, M. Ed. Captain, USAR

Larry, Lynn, and sisters,

I'll alway remember Ed and Shirley as a couple who could share their differences as well as joys. They were a big part of the Great Generation. I am honored to have known them.

I am also grateful to Ed for writing a letter of recommendation for me to Officer Candidate School. It really paved the way for me.

You Friend, Dick Walker
