I had the opportunity to meet Charlsie while assisting pilot Marc Miller on an Angel Flight. We had flown in to Ft Walton Beach to pick him and Nelda to fly to another destination. While Marc was doing the necessary paperwork for the flight, I though I would talk with Charlsie, maybe see if he was nervous about flying in a small plane. I asked him if he was retired, he said he was retired from the Air Force. That immediately got my attention because my son is also in the Air Force now. I then asked what he did when he was in and he mildly said he worked on the planes. I then asked which planes he worked on (I should have asked which ones he didn't work on, it would have been a shorter list), but he listed over a dozen planes he had experience with. I then asked which AF bases he was at, same thing, he listed over a dozen all around the world. He told me more about what he did until Marc came back and said we were ready to go.
I remember thinking to myself what an interesting person Charlsie was and that I would love to go have a beer with him and listen to his experiences and get to know him more. Wish I would have.
Needless to say, I'm glad I didn't ask Charlsie if he was nervous about flying, I would have embarrassed myself to such an experienced aviation professional.
Rest in Peace Charlsie and Thank you for your Service, Sir.
