Cois Moultrie Obituary

Pee Wee passed away unexpectedly at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center on the morning of Jan. 15, 2012.
The son of John Moultrie and Hattie Lee (Collier) Moultrie, Pee Wee was born and raised in Albertville, Ala. While a young man, he performed with Hank Williams Sr. from 1938 to 1940 as a member of the original Drifting Cowboys band. With the outbreak of World War II, Pee Wee joined the U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943 at Brookley Field near Mobile, Ala. His specialty while in the Air Force was aircraft maintenance. He retired from the Air Force in 1971 as a chief master sergeant. In his later years he became something of a celebrity, playing his accordion and singing at Southern festivals and attending events honoring the life and times of Hank Williams Sr. Pee Wee contributed several artifacts from their time together to Hank Williams museums in Montgomery, Georgiana, and Nashville.
Pee Wee is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 33 years, Evelyn Josephine (Hill) Moultrie; daughters, Ann Jackson (Clyde) and Patricia Bayless (Thomas); grandchildren Dr. Jay Jackson (Stacey), Mr. Jason Palmer, Ms. Rachel Jackson, Ms. Lisa Butler (Kenny), and Ms. Christy Lynn Weltman (Jonathan); and five great-grandchildren. Pee Wee was both a patriot and a talented musician - he will be sorely missed.
A funeral service, with full military honors, will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Barrancas National Cemetery in Pensacola, Fla.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project www.woundedwarriorproject.org

Pee Wee I will never forget you coming to work with us out a Eglin Air Force Base. You and your wife worked for us for a few years. I will never forget the day you said that you used to play with Hank Williams Sr. I was stunned and surprised and also honored to have met a famous person as you. Thank you and your wife Evelyn for being a part of my life! May God make a special place in heaven for you so you may keep on playing music. Your friend Mickey Rytman

In 1976, I was getting out of the Air Force and staying with a friend in Fort Walton Beach waiting for my discharge. I was outside playing the 5 string banjo and Cois came out with his guitar and introduced himself. We sat and played together for quite a while and he told me about his connection to Hank Williams. I always remembered his name and the nice time we had together. If any family member happens to read this, I would enjoy talking to you.
