Mary Anderlik Obituary

BARRINGTON – Mary B. Anderlik, 96, of Barrington, passed away peacefully Saturday, June 4, 2011, at Lexington Health Care Facility in Lake Zurich, after a brief illness.
She was born March 14, 1915, at home on the farm in Parnell, Iowa, the oldest daughter of Arthur Dermody and Mary Jane Duffy.
She graduated from Parnell public schools, taught by the Sisters of Humility, and entered into nurses training at Mercy Hospital and acquired her registered nurse degree in 1936. She married the love of her life, Ralph Anderlik, on Oct. 2, 1939, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City, Iowa. They later moved to Barrington in 1944, where her husband was employed at Jewel Tea Co. She tenderly practiced nursing at Sherman Hospital and went on to private duty care.
She was a strong and loving person and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She dedicated her life to caring for the sick to find comfort and peace through her unyielding compassion and service as a registered nurse. Her Irish background influenced the way she lived and raised her family.
She was an active member of St. Anne's Catholic Church since 1944, St. Anne's Women's Club, Young at Heart and the Barrington Historical Society.
She is survived by her four sons, Jim (Dini) of Johnston, Iowa, Ed (Kathy) of Crystal Lake, Tom of Buffalo Grove and John (Karen) of Richardson, Texas; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clement Dermody of Parnell, Iowa, and Arthur Jr. (Marietta) Dermody of Williamsburg, Iowa; and a sister, Bernice Skarbek of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Art and Mayme Duffy Dermody; her loving husband, Ralph; her daughter, Mary Lou; a sister, Margaret Eichorst; a sister-in-law, Blanche Dermody; and her brothers-in-law, Richard Eichorst and Herbert Skarbek.
The visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 8, at Davenport Funeral Home, 149 W. Main St. (Lake Cook Road), Barrington. The visitation will continue from 9 a.m. Thursday, June 9, until the 10 a.m. funeral Mass celebrating her life at St. Anne's Catholic Church, 120 N. Ela St., Barrington. A private family burial will be at noon Friday, June 10, at the family plot in Iowa City, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in her name to St. Anne's Women's Club or a charity of the donor's choice.

I was her neighbor for 10 years. When I would be leaving for work, I would see her in her kitchen window and we would wave to each other. It always gave me a sense of comfort. We would see each other more often in the spring and summer when both of us were working in our gardens -- her vegetable and mine flowers. My visits to her would be at her kitchen table with tea and cookies or home baked cake. Sometimes we would spend 2 hours just visiting. I will miss her terribly because of her warmth, kindness and friendship. She always remembered my birthday. She was a wonderful gentile lady.

What a beautiful tribute to a lovely lady. Her loss is felt by many. I had the pleasure of working with Mary at the St Anne's funeral luncheons and enjoyed her company so much. My fond memories will bring me peace and I pray that yours will help comfort you.
