RUTH L. EWEN VALPARAISO, IN Ruth L. Ewen, 96, was called to her heavenly home on Saturday, September 17, 2011. She was born on April 11, 1915 in Hobart, IN to Louise and Edward Schavey. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hobart, and graduated from Hobart High School. She married Howard P. Ewen on November 28, 1935. She was a farm wife, doing all kinds of farm work in Lake County and kept the books for the family Oliver dealership for several years in Lowell, IN. Between farming and gardening, she enjoyed flowers. She was active in the Ainsworth-Deep River Fire Department Auxiliary. Ruth was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church from birth until 1964, when they moved to Wanatah and continued farming there. She was active in St. John's Lutheran Church at Wanatah. She moved to Valparaiso, IN in 1980 and attended Heritage Lutheran Church. Her favorite pastime was to play her baby grand piano. She needed no music and played beautifully. She played for all her guests in her home and for the residents at Claire- Bridge Assisted Living and at the Willows. Ruth was preceded in death by her father, Edward Schavey; one son, William; one daughter, Ellen; one granddaughter, Lenore Mae; step-father, William DeWell; mother, Louise Schavey DeWell; husband, Howard P. Ewen; sister, Annabelle Larson; and brothers: Conrad, William and Eldor DeWell. Surviving are two sons: Howard E. (Patricia) Ewen of LaCrosse, IN and David L. (Judy) Ewen of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; one great great grandson; along with many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are two sisters-in-law: Mary DeWell of Naperville, IL and Lois DeWell of Marquette, MI. Visitation will be Tuesday from 4:00-8:00 PM at Moeller Funeral Home, 104 Roosevelt Rd., Valparaiso. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 AM at Moeller Funeral Home with the Rev. Joseph Ostafinski officiating with burial to follow at Ridgelawn Cemetery, 4201 W. Ridge Rd., Gary. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heritage Lutheran Church. Moellerfuneralhome.com
