I first met Mrs. Hobby when she was visiting Austin in about 1984. The Hobbys had a house next door to the co-op I lived in on Pearl Street. Years later, I got to know her a little better when my friend Taddy McAllister and her mother Edith would visit from Washington, D.C. and San Antonio, Texas, respectively. Taddy and Edith were always house guests of Gov. and Mrs Hobby at their lovely home on South Blvd. Mrs Hobby was a welcoming and gracious hostess.

I remember the first time I met Diana. We had just moved to Houston where my husband joined the Houston Post. She was gracious and warm and went out of her way to introduce me around. She always made me feel at home in her presence. I suspect she did that for most everyone. My heartfelt condolences go out to Bill and all the family. She was one amazing woman.

Dear Hobby family,
I feel very sad that Diana is no longer with us. You all were such an important part of my childhood and we had so much fun together. Laura and Paul, I will never forget our secret way that we climbed over the mulch piles and into each other's backyards and our never ending tadpole pursuit! Our Mom's took turns feeding us and bandaging our wounds! On behalf of the Pranke family, please know that we love you all.
Love, Carolgray

Dear Kate and Paul,
Please accept my deepest condolences on your loss. I never knew your mother but I actually new all about her. Connie Sweatlick, who was my office manager and personal assistant for several years worked at the Post for many years as well. Whenever she would talk about her time there, she would always talk about your mother. She told me how kind she was to everyone, regardless of their social status or position at the Post. She would say things like " It didn't matter if you were the VP of something or a secretary like me, if you got in the elevator with Mrs. Hobby, she knew who you were." Please receive an extra measure of the grace of God this week.

The world has lost a great lady! We worked on doctorates at Rice together. Diana was always dedicated, energetic, and extremely kind. Hearing that I loved opera, she invited me to go with her several times using her family's own tickets, and introduced me to her children and friends. She also organized a very pleasant pool party at her home to help fellow grad students meet and talk about studies. She had a wonderful laugh, and made a real effort to draw people out and help strangers feel comfortable together. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Bill and Paul,
You and your entire family have my deepest prayers, warm and sincere prayers, and love and support over your profound loss. On the infrequent times that my path crossed that of Diana's, I was always impressed (and inspired by) her inner and outer beauty, her warm and friendly nature, and her Golden Rule Attitude. May she rest in peace.

THE HOBBY FAMILY WAS VERY MEANINGFUL TO ME , AS A NEWCOMER, IN 1967. THEY TOOK A CHANCE ON ME AND SUPPORTED ME PERSONALY AND THROUGH THE MEDIA OF THE HOUSTON POST. IN 1967 WHEN I ARRIVED IN HOUSTON, BILL TOOK A CHANCE ON ME AND ALLOWED THE HOUSTON JUNIOR WMAN'S CLUB TO SPONSOR THE HUNTER AND JUMPER SHOW AS A FUND RAISER. THIS SUPPORT LED TO MISS IMA AND MANY OTHERS TO SUPPORT US, LATER BILL HOBBY STEPPED IN AND HELPED THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON AS WE DEVELOPED A NEW SCHOOL OF MUSIC AND THE MOORES OPERA HOUSE.
